A challenge to every DU'er without a star..
Hello,
I joined DU as a member earlier today because I saw that you were honoring veterans on your home page. As a veteran, I appreciate that. And I have spent some time on the site today and enjoying it very much. But I noticed something that bothers me. There are many posters among this community who have no star by their names. Seems to me that many of these folks have never contributed to this worthy cause. So, my challenge to all those who have not contributed - please do so! I'm sure it takes a fair amount of money to keep this site going, so please, if you have not yet contributed... I respectfully request.. put some money where your mouth is and pony up.

I donated yesterday. I get so much more from this site than what I donated. It was the least I could do. :)

I'm nearly a newcomer as well but I thought I would extend a welcome!

I, too would love to have a star next to my name. I will donate as soon as I have some extra $$. Being a grad student/research assistant/slave makes donating to worthy causes hard. During the campaign I donated my labor instead of the money I don't have.

But, I'll donate to DU soon- promise! :)

11. We are in the same boat.
I am also a grad student/research assistant/teaching assistant/cheap labor here... and graduate students seriuosly do not make much at all.. especially since the tuition rates have been rising and rising and... (you get the point!) :)

I'd love to have a star beside my name, and will do it as soon as I can...

btw, I know there isn't a minimum, but how much do people normally donate?

Contributing money is nice, but we as democrats know under bushies wonderful economic policies many are not well to do. It would be wonderful if we all were plush with money, but we are not.

I keep see ridiculously sexist threads here.

I appreciate that you are a veteran and I understand what you are saying. I'm not going to financially support a group that regularly discounts the opinions, experiences and feelings of 50% of the population.

60. Iris, I'm glad you learn alot here...
... and I hope that one day that you decide that the knowledge you acquire here is worth a small contribution. I understand what you are saying about sexist threads, but that's what freedom of speech is all about. In this world, any where you go, you will find sexism. It's wrong, but it's a fact of life.. I would simply encourage you to continue expressing your viewpoint to those whom you consider sexist, or better yet, just stay away from those threads.
Respectfully,
up-in-arms.

You are talking about the Lounge (moderator rightly moved this subject to the Lounge from GD, where I ran across it and originally posted).

I have the Lounge hidden on my latest page, and never bother with that forum.

I still say that I have not seen sexist comments on the other forums.

6. hey now...
don't forget there are people here who are too poor to donate money to anything except their bills.
i would love to donate to worthy causes, but all i have to offer is my time and effort. we are doing good to live, and this year we will actually have christmas presents for our family.
before being too harsh, don't forget there are people like me out there.
btw, I am a college student (nursing) and my husband supports both of us (he has no post-secondary education, so his options for good jobs are limited - he now makes $10/hr making 'manufactured' houses), and we are (finally) financially responsible.

21. i'm not sure what to say to that...
i haven't been on DU very long, because I only heard about it recently. I'm not even sure I really know what a freeper is.
all i can tell you is that my whole family, including me voted for kerry. I am very liberal in my ideals, i am pagan - not christian, and the thought of 4 more years of * scare the shit outta me (i hope i can finish school without *'s policies messing it up somehow, i hope my husband doesn't lose his job, again, and i really hope *someone* protects our reproductive freedom)
but, i guess all you can do is follow my posts to know for sure... and even then, i could never ask anyone to donate for me (my pride is sometimes my downfall) eventually i will be able to donate to DU, it will likely be awhile though - better late than never B-)

22. Being on Social Security
and contributing money I really couldn't spare to the Kerry campaign and the DNC (which was the last contribution this month), makes it impossible this month and next month is Christmas. So for me DU will have to wait until Jan. You have no idea how hard that is when you really want to give and have to wait.

25. Well, for some of us, money is very tight.
I am a freshman in college, and I have nary a dime to spare, working 20 hours a week and having 15 credit hours. I come here to relax and remind myself that there is sanity in the world.

I love this site, but I cannot afford to help. I am truly glad that you have money to donate, and hope you continue to visit. But, as for me, I need to concentrate my money on my schooling.

33. Sometimes we offer
a donation to other members who cannot afford a star. I have given donations for two people to have stars and my original star was donated by someone else!

We're nice like that.

And welcome to DU. I was one who had a LOT of posts and no star for a while, just something I hadn't gotten around to, when my anonymous donor gave me one.

So I threw in another donation to keep my star going and gave for two others.

I was inspired by the generosity of my anonymous donor.

When I get paid, I'll donate two more stars. DU needs the money.

On edit, I'll also double check the posters to make sure no one else has given them a star. Just in case. If they still are starless, then we can go for it.

260. Thank you.

Never went to Viet Nam, but I honor all those who did. I was assigned to Germany from 1968-1973, and stateside until 1976, when I opted out. Saw some terrorism in Germany, though. A radical group called the Badder-Meinhof Group blew up the building in which I served, killing four. I was not there at the time it happened, but showed up a few minutes later. Some bad stuff..

I was in the Army from 77- 84 in Germany. The people who did the bombing were dispatched from this earth on a cold day in Mar 1978. One was a women the other a man. I know because I was there. One of those nasty little secrets of the cold war. We were working with the polizei (German police) on a case involving a case where we suspected that members of the Bader Meinhof gang were going to attempt to steal some weapons from an army base around Frankfurt. They were given a chance to surrender but decided to go down in a blaze of glory.
I wanted you to know so that you maybe get a little concolation out of the fact that the deaths of your friends was avenged.

This is from retiredgrunt, he asked if I could get this message to you.

58. OK, friends without a star, here's how you can earn one at no cost to you!
I started this thread, and I just joined DU and contributed today. I am really humbled by all the responses, and so I would like to transform my original challenge into a little contest for every one who can't afford a star. I am willing to donate in the name of three other DU'ers. Here's the deal. Tell me why I should donate on behalf of YOU! I'll pick the three responses I like best by 3:00pm EST on Friday, and I will then donate on your behalf so that you get the star. This is just a small way to reward three of my fellow laborers for the cause of truth, justice and the American way!
It will be fun, and it will raise a little more money for this great community.

And this is the link to the donaton page: http://www.democraticunderground.com/donate.html
I realize I'm an awkward source for this info, since I don't have a star. Hope to change that by the end of the year. Unexpected dental and medical bills of late, plus I admittedly lost plenty of cash wagering on Kerry.
