1. I'm in DC (arlington va really)
Cuz everyone seems so well prepared this time (local govt, regular folks), I'm almost sure that means it will MISS us (or not hit us hard).

Tomorrow I'll mow the lawn (ok, not hurricane related, except that it might be too soggy for awhile after Thurs) and stow the lawn furniture and grill somewhere to keep 'em from blowing away. Got staples but not extra water or batteries or flashlights (must be some around here somewhere) cuz as the storm has been weakening, so has my resolve.

Keepin' my fingers crossed anyway...

4. I was going to leave Raleigh, for Winston Salem.....but since it's
weakened a little.....I'm going to stay. Also all those other hearty "inland NC DU'ers" were all staying so I didn't want to be a wimp.

If it turns out to be worse than the other strorms I've been through here......I'm going to be really mad at all those DU'ers....or invade their houses so that I can eat at their house on their gas grills with their food saved by their generators! LOL's ;-)

... GUSTY WINDS TO AFFECT THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA LATE THURSDAY...

DUE TO THE SIZE AND STRENGTH OF THIS TROPICAL SYSTEM... A GRADUAL INCREASE IN WIND SPEEDS SHOULD BE FELT AS FAR WEST AS THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA ON THURSDAY.

THE STRONGEST WINDS IN THE WESTERN CAROLINAS WILL AFFECT LOCATIONS NORTHEAST OF A LINE FROM CHESTER TO SHELBY TO MORGANTON TO BURNSVILLE. NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 20 TO 30 MPH BY AFTERNOON... WITH WIND GUSTS REACHING 40 MPH FROM SALISBURY TO STATESVILLE AND TAYLORSVILLE BY THURSDAY NIGHT. LOCATIONS FARTHER TO THE SOUTHWEST WILL EXPERIENCE LESS WIND. 6. Bring it On!
This one's a wimpy little sucker. Nothing like Camille, David, or any of the other killers we've lived through.

Might cause some damage in coastal areas, and tidal surges are always a worry, but it's gonna hit, do a little dirty work, and then start meandering up the coast or inland losing steam all the way.

By the time most of us see it, it will be just another rainstorm.

A really, really big rainstorm, but just a rainstorm.

No one around here seems to be all that worried. The locusts haven't been hitting the stores cleaning them out of milk, bread, and canned soups, although there has been a slight run on duct tape recently.

Is duct tape now the leading indicator of public unease?

9. just battening down the hatches in NE-PA
local weather is forcasting high winds and alot of rain

When Floyd came through in '99 we lost power for 3 days. We have our own well for water, and the pump went out with the power. We carried buckets of water from a neighbor's pool so we could flush the toilet.

This time we are stacking up several containers of water just to use for the toilet.

Meanwhile we've got a few more gallons for drinking/cooking, portable radio, flashlights, extra batteries, candles, coolers are ready for ice. Vehicles are gassed up, and have some cash on hand.

Brought the house plants into the house yesterday, just a few odds and ends to finish up today

I am ready for the big blow. I have taped, tied, chained everything around my house. I expect to lose power, have a lot of wind and rain. But I got Grey Goose to help me through. My wife shrugs it off but she aint seen nothing yet.

11. Chapel Hill-Durham Checking in
Isabel is supposed to make landfall tomorrow morning around Ocracoke Island. Surf is already choppy. Swells along the Outer Banks starting this evening.

Inland, we are supposed to get heavy rains, but not that much wind. I've got food, water, and I still need to go out today for batteries and candles. I can "make do" but I always like to have extra.

19. yuh-huh... I believe you...
like Supe's EVER gonna be low on batteries. ;-)

I've just finished my prep today. Food laid in, water containers filled, generator tested and running. It would've been nice to have figured out how to wire the generator into my household system so I could use outlets instead of extension cords (and run the well pump). Maybe for the next winter ice storm...

BTW - Supe and Koko - you guys are welcome to cruise out to the boonies if you lose juice and wanna ride it out with a mini DU party. That is, if my place remains accessible. I expect moderate storm winds here, but no word yet about this one spawning lots of tornados like Fran did. THAT'S what worries me.

32. just a note about hooking the generator to your house circuit...
please don't.

Electricians working to restore power have been shocked by this very practice. What it does is it backfeeds electricity into the power lines. Use the generators with extension cords only, please!

and whereas I was going to evacuate when the storm was Cat 3 or greater, I've just taken precautionary measures (bought beer and water) and am going to weather the storm at home.

We are having coworkers join us for however long it takes, but this should be fun.

I'm worried about the DU'ers in Pennsylvania. They've had record rainfall this summer and can expect another 6 to 10 inches of rain from Isabel. I hope they think they're not immune.

29. St. Mary's, MD Staying put.
Windows are taped, loose stuff is packed away, bike is in my dorm, room mate left with her mother. Thank goodness I'm on the third floor, the first is going to flood, everyone knows it. I have my list of emergency contacts, and I have seen the emergency food. And I'm not drunk or even drinking, unlike others on campus. Alcohol, college students, water front property and hurricanes; bad combination.(If you're wondering, home is in MN, thats why I'm staying put.)

The wind picked up around sun down, but the last two days have been beautiful, thanks to the high pressure outside Isabell. Looking at the very latest from nhc.noaa.gov I'm a little freaked about flooding more than anything.

I'm not used to having DAYS to wait for a storm to get to me, and the waiting is driving me a little crazy. With tornadoes, they come out of nowhere with 10 min warning and are gone within a half hour. This is so drawn out!!

Thanks for letting me freak a little. Be safe everyone!!

31. Chesapeake VA...near Norfolk and Va Bch
Staying put...

All's battened down. I think we'll lose power and get a lot of wind and rain, but we'll survive.

My biggest concern was for my horse, but he will be fine, too. We decided to lock open the shedrow stall doors (these are stalls that face the outside) and allow the horses loose in the field. If you keep horses in during a storm like this, they can be trapped in a collapsed building and drown or thrash around and get hurt. Outside they turn tail to the wind and ride it out with survival instinct. We tagged them with identification, checked the fences, removed loose objects, and now all we can do is wait it out.

As for me, I have water, batteries, flashlights, food, and of course, chocolate and Xanax, so no worries here!!!
