I just love Jean Shepherd's "A Christmas Story"
It is out now on DVD and comes with a little bobble head collectible of Ralphie. I watched it this afternoon with my son. It is such a great escape. I especially love the scene in the Chinese restaurant on Christmas. In a small way it made me believe that just maybe things might someday be o.k.

3. I Met Jean Sheppard in 1971
At a book signing in Morristown, NJ. He was just the same in person as he sounded on the sound track of that movie.

When I was a kid, he had an hour-long radio show on WOR in New York. He would just sit there and talk. It was GREAT radio.

Today, WOR carries such mental midgets as Bill O'Reilly and Michael Savage. What a descent into hell.....

4. I loved Shep, when I was a kid.
He lived near me, on Buttermilk Bridge Rd., in Washington Twp.(Warren Cty.) NJ. I used to listen to him every night on WOR, listening on an old tube superhet radio.

Excelsior. Flick. Gasser. "The Bear Missed The Train".

I miss those times so.

73s wherever you are, K2ORS. 73's.

Or if anyone has mp3 links to them on a web site somewhere. I'd love to hear them again.

5. That's one of my favorite movies.
I love it when the narrator is describing the bully -- "Scut Farkus -- what a horrible name. He was just standing there staring at us with yellow eyes. I swear to God, he had yellow eyes!"

We watch it every year and still laugh out loud.

13. Love 'em both.
Hopnoodle goes for $50+ on eBay, I've been watching for it, one of our all-time favorites.

From A Christmas Story, I remember the snowsuits, with the mittens hanging off the sleeves, for the little kids! Girls weren't allowed to wear pants to school in my area (near Pittsburgh), and we had heavy, lined woolen "snow pants" we wore under our dresses. More often, girls went to school on snow days bare-legged, with oxfords and socks, sometimes with boots over our shoes.

26. Hey, 12 posts!
Welcome, Scarlett1! I lived in Latrobe until I was 19,1969. Back in the 50's we had some real snowy winters, but I seem to remember that there were many years when the skies were overcast, the rain was cold and wet, and the much hoped for snow storm (and school closings) were rare. I've been in Florida since 1980.

I saw the "fra-gee-lee" sex lamp for sale in a catalog last year around this time, but I don't remember where. I loved A Christmas Story so much I almost bought one.

I saw Polar Express today, and it made me so happy I had tears in my eyes.

16. Target
It comes in a special "20th Anniversary Edition" all made up for the holidays. It comes with two DVDs. One is the movie and the other is the extras. It was $19.99. It should be around everywhere, I would think.

...hates it!

I want to get the DVD, but I know they'll never let me watch it when they're home.

They say it's depressing! Can you believe that?

...anyone interested in acquiring audio rebroadcasts of Shep should check out a link on flicklives.com: it's for Mass Backwards, a show on WBAI in NYC which features every week a free download of a complete Shepherd show. The files are typically about 5.5 MB apiece and can be played on your computer using the free RealPlayer software. For a donation to WBAI, you can usually get some kind of Jean Shepherd premium, which consists of compact disks containing several shows. Awesome stuff!!! The world needs more Shepherds and fewer O'Reillys.
