Finish This Sentence: "I Like DVD's Better Than Video Tapes Because..." |

... because of the deleted scenes that never made it into the final version.

Plus, chapter find. Plus deleted scenes. Plus, director's commentary. I love DVD's!

If you say I have "The Great Outdoors" on DVD people will be like "WOW, he must really like that movie, it must be a cult classic or something. But if you say I have The Great Outdoors taped of Cinemax people will be like "Get this creppy kid away from me, that movie is old and lame".

due to the way the media is read. You could have a scratch on a DVD perhaps but you don't usually hear about the DVD 'wearing out' from repeated use like with VHS

i found when i came to canada some movies that are long eg titanic are on two vhs tapes unlike UK where its all on one tape ~ and while i know this due to longer vhs tapes wearing out faster it is annoying i mean if i wanted a break like that id have bought a VCD player or older 'flipper' DVD's

|
I *love* director's commentaries.
I also like the convenience, the sound/picture and all the bonus features.
I was terrified when they first started coming out that they would kill the laser disc market and then just duplicate VHS content, but there's been a great effort to add extras to the discs.

You can jump back an entire scene, but not just a few frames. Kind of a pain when you are used to VCR's and PVR.

wind themselves around the gears in the machine and get ruined. That's one of the many reasons - picture quality, sound quality, less space required, direct access, extra features, can put 5 at a time in the machine, etc.

1. Picture quality (also, I only but widescreen releases unless the original was TV)
2. Sound quality (especially Surround)
3. Compact (good for those of us who move a lot, especially)
4. Don't go mouldy in tropical climes
5. Players seem more reliable, as does the media
6. Special features
From a viewing standpoint, it's the special features that I love the most. Deleted scnes and featurettes are a real attraction, but I also really love to listen to the commentary tracks. Great way to learn a lot about the process of film-making or to appreciate what went into making your favorite films.

25. Prices are much better for DVD's. |
|
It wasn't that long ago that new releases on VHS would be anywhere from $39 to 89 dollars for a crappy video that would be worthless after 5 viewings. Now you can pick up the DVD at Costco for under $20 and get bonus material along with it, on a medium that looks the same after the 50th viewing as it did the first.

30. I agree with most of the comments.... |
|
... except....
I've never had a VHS tape "degrade" from repeated viewings. Must take a *lot* of views :) I have had some "go bad" where the tape jammed or whatnot.
I have some VHS tapes I recorded over 20 years ago, they look as good now as ever.
I like DVDs but find the "user interface" on most players (and the part the DVD itself does) somewhat lame. Too often I have to muck around to get it to do what I want. There is no reason for that IMHO.
Another thing - DVDs almost certainly cost a lot less to manufacture than VHS tapes, I sometime see movies on DVD for less than $10. That has got to be a plus :)
