Um.. this is my first post here, so sorry if I'm in breach of some netiquette or something.
First of all: thanks for this, guess some of you have posted your pic there too (I have):
http://www.sorryeverybody.com/gallery/1/Incredibly good to see all the nice faces and funny pictures :-)
It saved my day!
I've also followed some of the debate/material at DU during the campaign, as a reader only. But hey - it's time to mingle, or what?
Now, I've been debating rabid rightwingers for several years now, both in the US and in Norway, where I live. The level of groupthink among those people is very scary, and the episode described by threadstarter is everyday routine, not exceptional behaviour. You register. You dissent. You're banned.
I used to call myself a Conservative before this cultish, undemocratic movement turned the word into an insult. Liberal Conservative, I think the term was.
Ah, it all seems so long ago.
Before 911. Do we even remember anymore how it was to live in a world of progress?
A lot of people don't, they just listen to the spin they're served in a state of numbness, genuflecting to twisted power out of 'shock and awe' for the sheer size of their movement. And the apparent protection it provides against terrorism.
You got to hand it to Falwell: He knows how to pander to our human low-life instincts, switch off free thinking and turn simple people into radicalized morons without a clue.
People that are happy to just form a small group - on the internet or in RL - populate it with likeminded partisans, and sling rightwing tripe to each other. That's all there is to it. A Group.
Person A: Did you hear that Kerry <long and winding tripe filled with myths, half-truths or plain lies>, or what??
Person B: <jeer>
Person C: *snigger*
Person D: Yeah, they got him now <NRO quote>.
Person E: Yeah, him and Michael Manure <NRO quote>.
Person F: Yeh.
Person G: Yeh.
Person C: *snigger*
Person F: Yeh.
Person E: Yeah, him and Michael Manure.
Hanging out among the Christian Right-Right, wether it's in Norway or the US, is a trip to planet W.E.I.R.D where no one wants to hear the truth, not really. Not if it hurts.
It get's weirder.
Parallell to not wanting to hear the truth, they accept the truth as a factor in the debate - that what they forward as an argument may be a lie, but it's a GOOD lie. And if it happens to be the truth, all the better. Extra scorepoints.
The coherency of the debaters are often poor, you can easily use their own previous arguments against their (NRO's) last brainchild.
Not that it helps.
Me: But in your post <quote> you said the exact opposite?
Person A: *Nerner-nerner-NERNER! I doooon't listen!*
Person B: *posting decoy*
Person C: *Posting 'flak'*
Person D: *Spends the entire evening going through my posts, to find something not in accordance that I've posted, to get at me*
Person E: Your'e so hateful. Why do you hate us?
Never mind the TOPIC. Never mind DEBATE.
It's all a fight to win or lose for them, and the fervour of which they fight that fight, and the depths to which they are willing to lower themselves in the process, is shocking.
I am a person that likes to hear the truth. If it hurts, I don't stick my head in the sand like a coward but stare it straight in the face. Come hell or high water, I wanna KNOW!
But to a person that - in the same sentence - can accuse Kerry of wanting to implement Maoism in the US and of being a stinking rich capitalist, the facts are just in the way of a Good Day on the Board:
Hang out with partisans, get your predjudices confirmed and fill up the tripe-tank with the common accepted Truth of the Moment.
Ready for the next round. Day after day. If not disturbed by people like you and me, they can go on for ever, hammering into each other every new piece of slander and untruth from FOX, NRO, W.A.C.K.O and F.A.R.T TV until it sticks. They never break ranks by themselves.
I've dubbed their collected webfront 'The Wall of Distortion' because of it's incredible impact on the common sense of the Right.
You don't necessarily believe what you read in paper or watch on TV. But you will believe it if your friends tell you the same - repeatedly.
Add a minister that in a flaming speech tells you that GOD says it's true, and you got yourself a solid propaganda-machinery AND a servile political movement programmed to receive/participate/forward the product of it.
It's like something out of a Huxley novel, Orwell novel or Kafka novel, with two thirds of the Revelation thrown in for good measures.
To be served chilled, badly spelled in moronic argumentation topped by a misunderestimated no-gooder that has screwed and drunk himself through life, up to a point where he now can say: 'I'm stupid and I'm proud of it! You can be stupid too!'
How's that space shuttle program going? I'm in the market for a condo on the moon or something.
