What did Giuliani do to earn sainthood?
Can someone tell me what Giuliani did, beyond what any mayor of any city would have done, to help NYC get through the attacks of 9-11-2001?

2. Absolutely NOTHING
Up until 9/10/2001, he was considered scum. One day leter, he's a saint.

Totally undeserved, IMHO.

7. Absolutely agree. Had the same effect on Shrub.
Frankly, I really don't understand it. Are people really that stupid that one day they dislike a guy and the next day, he's a hero because he does exactly what any other mayor would do?

What did Shrub or Guliani do? Were they ripping out concrete with their bare hands? Comforting the widows and orphans? Manning the donation phonelines?

Personally, I have no clue if RG did ANYTHING better than anyone else could have. Did the cleanup start sooner because of him or did just take the credit?

Here's an asshole who tried to move his mistress into the mayoral mansion while his current wife was still living there, and he's a Republican saint.

3. St. Rudy looked great because Bush* hid in the bunker all day
and Pataki chose to lead* by making sure he was always in camera range of Rudy.

So, at the moment America cried out for leadership, all we had was Rudy and his ridiculous combover.

4. good question
same with Bush after 9/11--they did the same thing any mayor or president would do. Bush was all flash--going to Ground Zero and taking the Bull horn--big deal. To his credit, Rudy was more hands on and made his presence known everywhere including funerals for victims and rescue workers.

9. i was impressed
by rudi that day.since our "leaders" were hiding out, it was up to rudi to carry the weight. i think he helped more than new york, out here in the cornfields he was the man of the hour, reassuring america that new york would fight back..it wasn`t georgie that day,it was rudi.

He's now the patron saint of Punica fides, a small island off the North African coast.

11. He really was a saint right after 9-11
and it lasted all of two weeks. Compare his sterling performance to Bush's. Compare it to anybody's. He was tireless, his tone was reassuring, he said exactly the right things. But I knew it wasn't going to last, and sure enough, as soon as the smoke cleared, Rudi shattered this peace and calm after the storm by announcing that he wanted three more months to "finish the job." As if he was indispensable! What a load of crap! So you're right: he's not a saint. But for a brief moment, he came close enough for the city's purposes.

12. Finish what job?
Someone asked in an earlier post if Rudy was helping to rip out concrete with his bare hands. Is that the job he wanted to finish? Maybe he was talking about finding Osama.

15. I can't detract from the encouragement he gave BUT
isn't anyone asking if HE KNEW about the lies the EPA told about air quality? You can bet he was in on it. I can't imagine that the WH didn't consult with him or that he didn't ask them the question.

16. He did his duty.
You're right, it was probably NOT more than the mayor of any city would do. People who know him better than I can detail his shortcomings but, in extraordinary circumstances, he did his job.

Since the "President" was AWOL, he got attention. It's this comparison that made what he did seem so remarkable.

17. Fucked NYC, had an affair, married his mistress, then hired her to loot
the 9.11 fund. He is a GEN YOU EIN Republican!

Oh and he helped cover up the fact that the bush regime knew about the impending 9.11 attack and did nothing to prevent it, in order to further the power grabs for that regime.

No biggie.

18. He didn't run and hide on 9/11
He tried to keep some order in the chaos of the day and provided some leadership during a crisis. Not really a big deal as thats what leaders are supposed to do. I can't stand the man or his politics but I did gain some measure of respect for him on that day just for doing his job under terrible circumstances. Bush* on the other hand...

21. The brave Rudy didn't run on 9/11
and he was brave enough to take on powerful opponents like:

squeegie-men
street vendors
the homeless
welfare recipients
art museums
David Dinkins (and almost lost)

22. He did what he's always done.
Took credit for everything.

Put blame on everyone else.

Told everyone to shut up.

Managed the news and threatened any reporters who got out of line.

Stuck his face everywhere so we'd see him, and only him, as the hero of 9/11.

Took advantage of a tragedy to boost his image and ego.
