What are your hobbies/interests?

Ever since I discovered DU, I've pretty much stayed on the 2004 Election forum. I do come to the DU lounge forum every now and then when I need a break from the voter fraud issues, and when I need a smile.

I'm curious to know what your hobbies/interests are? I myself love:

- anything that has to do with home decorating
- I just recently started a sword and knife collection
- I play guitar and write songs
- low carb recipes
- I like going out to see live local bands
- I love meeting new people online or in person
- I collect local artists' art work to display in my home
- I'm an avid American Chopper fan

I love going to antique shows with my daughter
I'm a big fan of classic animation (Looney Tunes, Tex Avery, Max Fleischer, some Disney) and collect everything I can find on DVD.
When I can afford it, I enjoy traveling; my favorite destinations are Maui, Europe, and Vancouver. Someday I'd like to cruise to Alaska, and visit the Caribbean.
I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of right now.

plants. I love growing them, cutting them, making new plants from cuttings, telling people what to do in their yards, doing yard projects, and totally changing a yard from a waste of space to something nice. I do it for work and as a hobby.

I paint and draw. I have enough credits to have a degree in Art, but never collated it into the paper. Art student.

the east coast stuff I am not familiar with...East coast winters tend to be colder than those here so it can be a whole different plant palette back east.

I heat mild steel to red hot and pound it with hammers on anvils and and dies to sink a shape...they are from 7"-12" x 3"-5". I poke holes in them with punches and then I polish them with wire brushes and wax. They look like faces.

Figure skating - I am a figure skater, and I am an obnoxiously avid fan and trivia nut about it (as bad as the worst baseball and football fans). I am the kind of nut trying to perfect double jumps and flying camels in my thirties, which I would have been too afraid to try twenty years ago when it would have been more normal.

Jewelry making - I took up jewelry making when I developed a nickel allergy and had trouble finding jewelry I could wear. It's now a major creative outlet.

Those are the main ones, but I have other interests like general crafts (needlework, etc.), reading, movies, etc.

47. I do train in FS. I practice three times a week, including weekly lessons

It is the most engrossing exercise. There is always something new to learn. In addition to freestyle (jumps, spins, footwork and working on a competitive program), I have done some ice dance (just testing, no competing), and I have started doing some school figures to develop my edging and control. I love the combination of the phyisical and the creative. I have seen people in their seventies still skating and completing in adult competitions.

For Christmas ornaments, have you tried ribbon star ornaments? They are like prairie points of ribbon pinned to a foam core in a star pattern. If I can figure out how to post pictures maybe I can put some pictures up. They're hard to explain, but can be very nice to do. My mother and I used to do them when she was alive, and I have all of those ornaments and they completely cover the tree. Also, on these ornaments, you can use a piece of embroidery in the center of each side of the sphere and frame it with the prairie points of ribbon. We used to use a piece of silk ribbon embroidery on satin for the centers, which went well with ornate ribbons.

Reading, especially history.

Bicycling, I have a goal of 1500 kilometers to reach from April to October (I can only handle the warm months). I've been lazy this year, only reaching 1223.

Gardening, I love to grow anything. Unfortunately my job has me in an area where red concrete pretends to be soil.

Caring for wild birds, as I become too attached to dogs and cats, this allows me to have 'pets' without the emotional connection.

Walking the beach. I inherited my mother's condo which is right on the ocean (Atlantic). I love to take my night scope and watch all the little nocturnal critters in the surf.

Favorite board game: Scrabble, I can play in either English or German. Any takers?

Traveling: I'll go anywhere if I have the time and the means. I've been to twenty-three states and seventeen countries.

My average speed is 25 kph on a mountain bike ad I currently reside in a hilly region. When I'm in the low country of SC (flat as a pancake), my average speed can reach 28-29 kph. I usually ride at least 30-35 kph per outing.

My favorite country? That's a hard one to answer. In Europe it has to be Poland. Why? It has many similarities to my home state of SC. Also, Americans are quite popular there. While doing research on my doctorate, I had to travel to many small towns and villages to meet the actual participants of my research topic whom I wanted to interview. Children always ran out to greet me; and, I did not know why. I found out that it was because I looked American (blue jeans, hiking boots and such) and they wanted to meet me; plus many had never met a foreigner up close. Many of these small towns to which I had to go had erratic bus service, so I hiked in or hitch-hiked. The children wanted me to come to their homes and meet their families, many of which had relatives in the USA.
I would also had to include Norway. Being from the deep south, I have always been interested in the extreme north. So I took a jaunt to Hammerfest, the northernmost town in continental Europe (about 400km north of the Arctic Circle) and then to Tromso (about 200km north of the AC).

In the Caribbean my favorite was Barbados. It was relaxing, the remnants of colonial architecture combined with friendly people made me feel welcome.

In Asia, my favorite was Hong Kong, prior to 1998 (I was there in 1980). It was full of activity and there was always something happening.

And, in closing, I absolutely loved the maritime provinces of Canada.

Swords are cool! :D Do you get the Museum Replicas catalog? Their prices can be steep but they have some beautiful stuff that is not just for show. My cousin has a really sweet swept-hilt rapier from them, with a matching main-gauche. One of these days I'm gonna steal them, LOL. I love going to Ren Faires and stuff and no outfit is complete without a blade IMO. :) I tend to prefer eastern weaponry more...the katana is probably my favorite sword but I also love scimitars, they are just so cool-looking and just feel better in my hands than the typical western long sword. Also it helps that one of my favorite fantasy characters of all times wields 2 of them. :)

I'm pretty much a stereotypical fantasy/sci-fi dork. Most of my hobbies are related to it somehow (reading, writing, watching TV shows & movies, dressing up and going to conventions, Dungeons & Dragons). Well not so much the stereotype because I'm a girl, I guess. But there's a lot of us into it. :)

Nice to see someone else who likes the comics... Gilberto Hernandez is my personal god, and all lefties should read his stuff. I'm ashamed to say I also like Dave Sim, even though his last book revealed that he is essentially a fascist (or that's what he is this week anyway - the guy is truly nutty). I'm supposed to be a cartoonist/illustrator, but I haven't really done anything in months.

Music: sort of into "urban" music at the moment, but I had my speed metal phase, my acid jazz phase, etc etc...

Movies: the good ones, which is about 0.00001% of them. Just finished watching 'Sling Blade' - not bad, fell back on cliches a couple of times. I'd give it an 8.5.

Games (for the geeks on the thread): the Tekken and Battlefield series.

Food: I've recently become addicted to Vietnamese food and pretty much eat nothing else... anyone know if a diet based entirely around rice noodles is particularly good/bad for you?

Other than that: drinking, smoking, swearing.

I love to read and write. I hope to submit articles to the internet and eventually write a book. I enjoy fiction, non-fiction, chicken soup for the soul sappy stuff, just about anything that strikes me.

I love theater. I watch the Tony awards every year and weep for the shows I didn't get to see (since I am on the opposite coast). I am still mourning the fact that I didn't get to see Wicked in SF (it premiered there).

I love pretty much all things visual. I love film, have enjoyed some foreign films, drama, comedy, classics--if it's black and white with some kick ass actors and a great story I am there (i.e. All About Eve).


I collect music videos. I tape them incessantly and am very picky about the way the videos are taped and what goes on tapes together. (no 80's vids with modern videos, no Manson with Puffy, etc.) Mostly groups, songs and artists that I like. I don't tape many hip hop videos unless they are classics (Run DMC, Beastie Boys era).

I also tape many live music performances from television. Usually once they air on the Grammys, American Music Awards and assorted other shows they are lost forever and aren't aired again. So I like capturing those moments to watch at later times.

I collect comedy performances. I love comedy and comedians and love to laugh. :)

I've loved making things and creating since I was a kid and just got back into this recently. I took an airbrush art class a month ago and hope to get good enough to earn a living at it.

I also plan to study photography and videography. Again, I'm very visually oriented.

I love to walk.
I love yoga and pilates.
I also enjoy Disneyland and many Disney animated features.

Here's the scary part--

I watch far too much of those shows that profile murderers, serial killers, etc. You know, American Justice, City Confidential, Court TV, etc.

I am a chick and like Playboy, pin up art, and know entirely too much about a few porn stars. I don't know why... I just know it's disturbing to me in a way. lol

Politics/current events: Well, obviously. I'm a girl who watches C-SPAN in my free time.

History: Specifically, I love ancient Rome, and medieval/Renaissance/Reformation Europe.

65. I just helped a local antique store assemble a full suit of armour ...

I'm more interested in the armour of the Roman era, but I also do medieval stuff. I've made a lorica segmentata and would like to learn how to do proper metal-to-metal articulation (as seen on knee joints for post 14th C armour) when I have more time and have acquired the right tools. For working 18 and 16-gauge mild steel, a proper throatless metal shear and a work bench to bolt it to would be much better than aviation snips and a hacksaw!

I currently own some replica helms -- Corinthian (c. 400 BC), Aquincum (1st century AD), and Deurne (4th century AD) -- also a 2nd-century Roman helm (Hebron model) which is currently out with the members of Legio XXX. (Some of the guys are freeper-types, but I guess there's no helping it!). I also fixed up a Deepeeka Gallic "H" for them with the cross-bracing installed as extra protection by the legions during the Dacian (Romanian) wars.
