Proposal for a Spanish DU Group

Mission:

"To allow a place for native Spanish speaking DUers to converse with others in their 'first' language. Our group also exists as a place for DUers just getting a grip on the language. Those DUers can learn from others, and eventually write and read Spanish better."

1. I don't speak Spanish but I think its a wonderful idea

The Hispanic community should be reached out to and embraced. Traditionally they have voted Democrat. Let's keep it that way. You could discuss issues important to Hispanics and make sure your voices are heard.

sorry-I love Spanish and watch spanish language stuff, and am looking forward to working w/ Francisco (Pancho) during the winter. He speaks English well, but since my work involves working with men from Mexico who speak little or no English, it would be sweet to have a spot where I could come and ask stuff like Como se dice "Quit running the lawnmower over my Sedum 'Autumn Joy', por favor."

I do have some Spanish-just not enough.

i'm in college and taking beginning spanish 1 this semester. I'll be taking beginning spanish 2 next semester... I want to learn spanish very badly...
I am going into nursing, however, and there aren't any classes here about spanish in the health care setting - after getting the basics down, that would help alot.
I would love to be able to try out my spanish here at DU and have help in correcting what I don't get...that would be more than my spanish professor does for me...

great idea...I am a nurse in Colorado and having a "certified medical translator" at the hospital might become required in the near future. You will be very valued if you are a nurse and can speak Spanish. There are some medical Spanish book available on line.

Bush seems to be hijacking the Hispanic vote. (Esp. in Florida) This would be a nice little step in showing Spanish-speaking voters that Dems and other assorted liberals value and respect them. We need to recognize that the Hispanic community is not a big lump of Mexicans, but rather a diverse community with needs that vary greatly depending on which sector of the community you're talking about. A Puerto Rican born and raised in New York is not the same as a Chicano living in California is not the same as a Cuban living in Miami, etc.

14. A Latino DU Group

Would be a great idea, I'm so discouraged with Bush getting 44% of the Latino vote,:eyes: I'm scared that Latinos are going to start voting Republican just because of "Moral Values" that would be depressing for a progressive minded Latino like me.
