Help! My oven won't clean itself!
I guess that would be expecting a bit much from it, since it's not a self-cleaning oven. And I KNOW it needs some sort of attention at this point, cleaning-wise, because everytime I turn it on it smells like burning. I just don't know how to go about it, really, so I'm hoping some of you have some tips for me on how to get this accomplished with an absolute minimum of effort on my part.

Any recommended cleaning supplies? Will 409 work? And do I need to do something to get the 409 residue out of it before I turn it on again, or will that just burn off and not flavor my food in an ugly manner?

I should've just gone for the self-cleaning oven. Dammit.

1. Stick your head in there and look around... !
Make sure to turn the oven on first, so as to light it up so you can see what the problem is... :dunce:

2. easy off oven cleaner does work
it stinks to high heaven (even the so-called low odor kind) so make sure you have a window open and plenty of air circulation.

the key is to give it enough time and let it do the work before you try to wipe it off.

self-cleaning ovens are definitely the way to go.

Good Luck.

3. I just cleaned the oven for my wife, and
I wouldn't recommend cleaning it without some type of spray-on oven cleaner, preferably one without fumes. Let the spray sit on the oven surfaces for two to three hours (depending on how yucky the oven is), and then you should be able to just wipe most of the crud off. DO NOT TURN ON THE OVEN WHILE THE CHEMICALS ARE WORKING. Heat isn't required. I also recommend cleaning the oven frequently, as it is much easier to maintain than to overhaul.

Good luck!

4. When you do get it cleaned...
line the bottom (under the element) with tinfoil. Makes for much easier cleanup in the future!
