The best Jewish deli in the world?
I'll nominate Zingerman's on Detroit St. in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The sandwiches ain't cheap, but this place is a food lovers paradise. The olive oils, the cheeses, the breads... I wish they had rooms for rent upstairs! The lines outside the building tell it all.

1. OMG you lucky stiff!!
There is just SO LITTLE here in Vegas to compare to the awesome places east of the Mississippi. And, if you do find anything that sounds that good it's almost certain to be in one of the big hotels, and the prices they would charge would make your deli's prices seem like mere pocket change in comparison.

I know where I'm going if I ever make it out to Chicago! :bounce:

2. Please tell me there's one in the bay area
Actually Berkeley has a MIGHTY FINE Jewish deli on Shattuck, past University (sorry I can't remember the name) even if it isn't totally kosher (I love cheese on my Reubens, but that, unfortunately, does not qualify as kosher)

God it would be nice to have one in Fremont tho....

6. They sell lots of stuff by mail order
They mail bread anywhere in the country, and it arrives fresh! I sent an Italian dinner to my brother and his wife on the other side of the country. They said everything was perfect, even the bread!
I don't know if they'll mail sandwiches though!

3. There was this place on the South end of Midtown NY...
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 08:42 PM by northwest
...when I went to NY seven or eight years ago that I can't remember their name at this moment. But they had the absolute BEST Reuben sandwich I ever had (only as far as Reuben's go, see my Quizno's thread). I wish I could remember the name of that place. It wasn't the original Reuben's, I know that.

4. Katz's on Houston Street
by far the best... the Carneige, which is the one I think you are describing used to be good, and still has a whole bunch of old farts that can't taste anymore, shilling for the place, but it is pricey, it sucks, and does not deserve it's reputation anymore.

I am sure some more NYers will shout me down... bring it on boychicks.

8. But Carnegie's cheesecake is to die for
I haven't had any for two years and am seriously thinking of having one shipped in for Thanksgiving.

5. There are no good Jewish delis around here
in the Champaign area. We have more than our share of corporate chain restaurants, but not much else. Sigh.........

9. What about Lox, Stock and Bagel?
It's in downtown C-U, not far from UIUC. Address is 52 East Washington. Rumor was that Adrian Belew used to hang out there, when he was doing demos for some King Crimson stuff, back in the early '80s. I haven't been there since 1984, but it was pretty good then. It was kind of like a deli, back then, but who knows now?

Also, there's Izzy Kadetz in downtown Cincinnati -- my late father used to love that place, they carried out from there a lot when he worked for the Cincinnati Post (he was a printer/pressman). There's still an Izzy's downtown, though they tried to franchise out to the 'burbs and failed miserably.

10. Lox, Stock and Bagel closed about 10 years ago.
They still haven't sold the building it used to occupy.

11. I loved Lox Stock and Bagel when I was in Champaign!!
About as close to a deli as you're going to get in Central Illinois. They did have one in Springfield but it didn't last...guess it was a tad too Jewish for downtown Springfield.

No real Jewish deli in St Louis...about as close as we come is Pumpernickles or Protzels in Clayton.

12. I hear ya
I'm from St. Louis originally. It's amazing that there are about a hundred places to get a brain sandwich or chili and eggs, and no good Jewish delis. That's the midwest for you.
