Wednesday Addams on Thanksgiving |
|
Wednesday Addams: Wait, we can not break bread with you. You have taken the land which is rightfully ours. Years from now my people will be forced to live in mobile homes on reservations. Your people will wear cardigans, and drink highballs. We will sell our bracelets by the road sides, and you will play golf. My people will have pain and degradation. Your people will have stick shifts. The gods of my tribe have spoken. They said do not trust the pilgrims. And especially do not trust Sarah Miller. For all these reasons I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground.
Addams Family Values, 1993

That movie came out the year after I decided not to do Thanksgiving anymore. That scene helped my mom understand it.
Of course, we also follow her Halloween costume advice. " I'm a homicidal maniac, they look just like everyone else."

2. I still do Thanksgiving, and I still love it. |

Celebrating a good moment doesn't require that you fail to acknowledge all the bad things that came later.
It represents a chance at peace and cooperation that was soon pissed away. It's still worthy of celebration.

3. I love her line later in the movie |

where her friend (Joel, I think), dressed like Gomez and imitating his voice, says, "How do I look?" Wednesday answers, "Disturbing." The timing is just brilliant.

4. I like the "Northern Exposure" Thanksgiving. |

The native population celebrates the season by throwing tomatoes at the white folks. Since pretty ripe tomatoes are used, the result is a bloody mess rather than injury. Holiday decorations combine harvest themes with the Day of the Dead, culminating in a parade. Thus the evils of the past are commemorated, although no current residents of Cicely are either oppressors or particularly oppressed. Finally, there's a big feast for the whole community.
Then everybody gets out their Raven decorations for the next big holiday.
