k. d. lang hymns of the 49th parallel.
Wow. Just wow. This woman's voice blows me away. Her interpretations of Neal Young's "After the Gold Rush" and "Helpless" literally made me cry. Pure genius.

3. k.d. lang was interviewed on a public radio show last month..
she was talking about this album and it sounded fantastic. Love her voice; I, who can't carry a tune in bucket, am just floored by her range.

Sounds like I should buy it. However, I am so mood-sensitive to music that if it's a downer at all, I won't be able to cope. Too much bad ju-ju in the world right now.

8. the 49th parallel isn't necessarily a downer. it's devoted to Canadian
songwriters. And I agree, Neil Young's "After the Goldrush"...what can you say?

9. First album I've bought since the "Bad Thing" happened.
And it has helped improve my mood considerably. It proved to me that there is still beauty in the world. Trust me, this album "good ju-ju"

4. Pride of Alberta
"Beef Stinks" ad campaign naysayers be damned!

I still remember the photocopied handbills around the University of Alberta in the early 80s promoting this androgynous singer with the sawed-off cowboy boots. Wish I'd kept a few.

5. I've been a k.d. fan for many years, have seen her live several times.
I saw her in Dallas right after she had recorded a duet with Roy Orbison and then a few weeks later he died. Her Dallas show was the first after his death. For her encore she did a version of Crying that *literally* has the audience in tears. She was down on one knee half bent over and singing from some cosmic depth only she could fathom. Unbelievably powerful.
