MatcomNews Breaking: UPDATE - Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese BACK On EBAY!
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 03:04 PM by matcom
note: this is an update from the story this morning that the auction had been shut down. THANK GAWD!

<snip>

HOLLYWOOD -- The Internet auction house eBay Inc. reversed itself Tuesday and is allowing bids for half of a 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich that its owner says bears the image of the Virgin Mary.

Diana Duyser, of Hollywood, put the sandwich up for sale last week, drawing bids as high as $22,000 before eBay pulled the item Sunday night. The page was viewed almost 100,000 times before being taken down.

An e-mail Duyser received from eBay said the sandwich broke its policy, which ``does not allow listings that are intended as jokes.''

But Duyser, a work-from-home jewelry designer who has bought and sold items on eBay for two years, said the grilled cheese wasn't a joke.

The auction was back on Tuesday afternoon with a top bid of $5,100. The winning bidder also has to pay $9.95 for shipping. In mocking response, two similar items were later posted _ grilled cheese sandwiches bearing the images of the Virgin Mary's used gum and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

A phone message left with San Jose, Calif.-based eBay was not immediately returned Tuesday.

2. Why does Mary keep appearing in food?
Wouldn't appearing on prime time tv be more effective than showing up on a tortilla chip in Nantucket?

22. Yes, yes, yes!! And the best part is that Lillian Gish died in 1993!!
So the timeline fits! She could easily have been reincarnated as a noontime snack.

13. OK, first of all it's not the Virgin Mary.
It's either Theda Bara or Gloria Swanson, but I'm pretty sure it's Theda Bara.
Unless it's Clara Bow. She was the "It" girl.
Nope, now that I put my stronger glasses on, I'm just about certain it's Theda. That beauty mark is very distinctive. And she always wore that shade of lipstick.
Glad I could clear this up for you.

11. I missed the Mother Teresa cinnamon bun, I will NOT be denied this icon

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- And you thought Elvis sightings were the rage in Tennessee.

It turns out the home state of the King -- particularly in the music haven Nashville -- is caught up in the buzz surrounding a "miraculous," and rather sweet, likeness of Mother Teresa .

The 1979 Nobel Peace laureate has been sighted -- on a cinnamon bun.

Hundreds of people have flocked recently to the Bongo Java coffee shop near Belmont University, where the bun was sold and currently sits inside a glass container.

30. Only 55 cents for shipping insurance?!?!
Are you kidding? If I'm paying $16,000 for a grilled cheese sandwich, I sure as hell am not going to risk the UPS driver getting hungry before he delivers it.
