Abercrombie & Fitch Settles Race Case For $40 Million

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has agreed to pay $40 million to black, Hispanic and Asian employees and job applicants to settle a class-action federal discrimination lawsuit that accused the clothing retailer of promoting whites at the expense of minorities, lawyers said Tuesday.

The lawsuit was filed last June in San Francisco by Hispanic and Asian groups charging that Abercrombie & Fitch, known for its "classic casual American" clothing styles, hires a disproportionately white sales force, puts minorities in less-visible jobs and cultivates a virtually all-white image in its catalogues and elsewhere. A second, similar lawsuit was filed against the company last November in New Jersey.

A&F's clientele is typically teenie-bopper girls with mom and dad's credit card and affluent gay men in the 20-35 y/o demographic. A few of my friends -- gay, naturally -- have called A&F stores their "liquor free singles bar."

In short: Their customers want to see hot, young, and typically white men. Catalogues or at the cashier, makes no difference.

It shouldn't be a surprise that there's discrimination. It's better for business.

13. They've also been taken to task

for placing minority employees in backroom type jobs, leaving more plumb jobs that are visible up in front for whites. It's not all that hard to boycott that place because their clothes are hideous, but the fact it is a racist company seals the deal for me.

Everytime I walked by there store at the local mall here they're always playing some really annoying techno/rave bullshit. I hate there clothes, and I hate what they represent. Ugh!!! :puke:

they used to play good music like Phish...yes I heard PHISH at the A&F store in the St Louis Galleria!

I'd buy A&F clothes when they were practically giving them away at the end of the season. What stores call end of season means there is two or three months of wearing left.

The only thing I'll concede to them is they have enough honesty to print "made in the Northern Mariana Islands" when everybody else just lies and prints "Made in USA" when it's obviously not.
