Does anyone have some really non-fishy-tasting low-fat fish recipes? I need to eat more fish, but I don't really like it.

As a result, I rarely eat fish. Since I've been having some health issues, I've considered fish oil tablets. They sound kind of gross, but so does fish to me anyway.

I did have a doctor that said my daughter would have to eat liver and I really had to read the cook books on that one. No one liked liver but all the kids and husband ended up loving the dishes I finally found. I was a little shocked my self.

Oh, allow me to proselytize for my sweet fishy oil tabs! I definitely feel a difference when I don't take them.
Omega 3 fatty acids are just so, so great. There's a lot of info on the internets (!) about them and how beneficial they are to your health. If you don't like the idea of fish oil tablets, you can also take flaxseed oil tablets which also contain Omega 3 fatty acids.

43. Fish oil capsules are better than fish |
|
They're not loaded with mercury, and, right now, any non-farm-raised fish is tainted. The farm-raised are fed crappy pellets that have their own risks.
So, fish oil capsules do the trick. I've been taking 4,000 mg a day for years, and the bad moods and sinking depressions I used to have have disappeared. Turns out the medical literature is now showing that bi-polar patient treated with massive doses of fish oil show distinct and measurable improvement - including over other patients treated with medication.
I hate fish, by the way.

3. I had someone tell me that. |
|
It was a couple friends in Louisiana, and despite having some of the best fish in the world there, they had never eaten fish that was prepared well. They were raving after dinner. We had Redfish that night.
Take a filet of something fresh, simmer in butter and herbs. A bit of white wine is good too. Snapper, Orange Roughy, Sea Bass. It's all good.
What's in your area?

I can't testify to the freshness since I'm in Iowa.
I've tried Alaskan Cod -- simmered in white wine and then rubbed with lemon pepper and baked.
Tonight I tried Talapia -- brushed with butter and herbs, sprinkled with brown sugar and then baked.
I've got some salmon swimming in bourbon... maybe for tomorrow or the next day. I'll probably grill or broast it.

25. I trust that your Doctor is a nutritionist as well... |
|
Most, and I mean no disrespect to any DU medical professionals, have no idea what nutrition is.
Saying, "eat more fish" without specifying which types, how much, and why is moronic.
Additionally, seafood is the #1 source of food poisoning. Between 3 and 8 percent of "fresh" fish bought at supermarkets contain e.coli (that comes from human and/or animal shit, btw).

as opposed to fish with scales, keep in mind that things like shrimp and lobster and scallops and crabs are the bottomfeeders.
That's right - consume them and you're essentially consuming garbage.
And, yes, American physicians know nothing about nutrition. Consumers are on their own, but the Internet has a vast wealth of information.
Sorry to sound like such a downer, but shellfish scare me.

I fish... Like... A lot in fishing season off our coastal waters. Here are some tips at how to prepare fish for those who want to try a change:
Picking out fresh fish is key. At a fish market, look for fish with clear eyes (not cloudy) and a spongy texture to the flesh. If you can push on it with your finger and it springs back without leaving a finger dent, it's good fresh fish. Otherwise, it's probably past it's prime.
Here are some fish that have a mild non-fishy-er taste:
Tilapia (fresh water, no omega-3's) Flounder/Sole Sea Bass Salmon Grouper Cod Whiting Spot/Croakers/Drums Silver/Red Snapper (if fresh, fishy if not) Catfish (fresh, no omega 3's) Trout (but very bony)
Fishy tasting fish (mackerel, tuna, etc.) can be made more edible by soaking fresh cuts in buttermilk overnight in the fridge. Most fishy tasting fish is dark meat fish (open water, big muscled fish), and drawing the blood out will improve the flavor tenfold. Just put the fresh cuts in a bowl or similar container and cover in buttermilk and let soak for 12-24 hours. Rinse and prepare.
I like to grill fish, but you can prepare it any way you like. I love to use a marinate. Zesty Italian and Ranch dressings can be used as a quick 2-3 hour marinate to flavor fish fillets. Soak the fish cuts in a bowl and then pan fry with olive oil or grill.
Grilling or pan frying with no coatings/crust also help you spot stray bones.

36. Prep tips for bullhead catfish. |
|
Select a board bigger than the catfish.
Nail the head of the catfish to the board with a ten penny nail.
Cut the skin just behind the gills and peel the skin back toward the tail. If you have trouble gripping the skin use a pliars or vice grips.
Remove the guts. Set aside any roe for cooking separately.
Sprinkle the surface of the fish with lemon juice to neutralize any "mud" taste.
Leaving the fish on the board, place fish on the top rack of the oven, set the oven on "broil" and cook until the fish is cooked all the way through (depends on size of fish).
Remove fish from oven, throw away the fish and the nail, eat the board. Goes well with a full-bodied red wine such as a merlot.

Rich folks eating fish feed on mercury too 'Healthy diet' clearly isn't RFK Jr. had his level checked and the Dr. told him if he was a pregnant woman there was a 100% chance his child would have brain damage based on the mecury level in his blood. EAT UP W! http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2002/11/05/MN93684.DTLMy own levels of mercury are so high -- I had them tested recently -- that a woman with the same levels would have a child with cognitive impairment. http://www.motherjones.com/news/qa/2004/10/09_402.html

46. Kung Pao fish. Oh god, that's so good. |
|
There's this restaurant that i go to. The only place (that I can afford anyway) that has kung pao fish. It is out of this world. And the flavor of the sauce almost completely masks the taste of the fish. Maybe that's a good way to go. But then Chinese food is not exactly diet food.
If weight is the problem cut way down on the simple carbs and exercise hard an hour a day.
The white flesh fishes are usually very mild tasting. Try 'em.
