One of my favorite British actors--Hugh Laurie--stars in a new American drama tonight. He plays an American doctor. It's supposed to have a Sherlock Holmes aspect to it as well.

"His patients don't interest him, but their diseases do. He gulps pain pills and insults his staff. But Dr. House is one of the most fascinating characters to visit TV in a long time. The doctor will be "in" when "House" premieres tonight on Fox.
The very American Dr. House is played by British actor Hugh Laurie ("Jeeves and Wooster," "Stuart Little.") It's exciting to play a character who has the courage to say what most people are thinking, says Laurie. "It's a great freedom and it's a very enjoyable thing to do, particularly when it is written in such a way as to make me sound much more intelligent and amusing than I actually am."
Some high-voltage talent also energizes the show including executive producers Paul Attanasio ("Homicide: Life on the Street," "Donnie Brasco"), Katie Jacobs ("Gideon's Crossing") writer David Shore ("Hack," "Law & Order") and film director Bryan Singer ("X-Men," "The Usual Suspects.")
Unlike other TV medical shows, "House" is more of a medical detective drama involving realistic and absorbing characters. If Dr. House is based on anybody, it's Sherlock Holmes, says Shore, who created the character."http://www.starbanner.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041116/NEWS/211160301/1017/FEATURES01Hugh Laurie is on the right (in a pic from Jeeves & Wooster)
