DUers with people working under them: Are you a good boss? |
|
I think I am, I could be a little more firm though. My one problem is to remember to tell people when they've done a good job. Last week one of our reporters did an excellent job on a story, I really thought it was good, I forgot to tell her until today.
How are you? What do you need to improve?

10. I was a good supervisor |

even if I was a bit too tenderhearted for the job IMO. Then I took off on my own and I am terrible to myself. I beat myself up over everything, even when I have no control of a situation. :)

I was a supervisor and I tried very hard to give snaps when someone did a good job. I think I was a pretty fair supervisor. In fact, I had an employee who left us and in her exit interview told my supervisor that the only reason she lasted as long as she did was because of me. You have to feel really good about compliments like that.

We're in the sub-Tropics, it's far too hot for Irish during the day, and we don't really get a winter either so it can't wait until then.

I expect hard work, and I lead by example. When the pressure builds, I let off steam. Please keep all body parts in the vehicle. No time for fools. And I throw paper-wads at anyone who pisses me off.

but I am a fantastic business owner! (I'm a sole proprietor, so technically I have nobody under me- however, I AM "under" all my clients!)

11. There's always room for improvement. |

Being the boss is like being a parent, it looks powerful when you are a kid --until you get the job and realize how tough it is.
I just had to fire somebody last week. I hate that part of the job. On the flipside, that same week I gave raises to employees who have been working hard.
I'd much rather hand out praise than hand out 'pink slips.'

12. my "very best boss in the world" sent me through Dale Carnegie |

classes to help me be a better project manager. What a valuable experience! Understand, I am in industrial construction and NOBODY sends you to classes like this, especially considering the cost! It has been so valuable to me in so many ways that it would take me days to describe it here. Suffice it to say that the sheet metal union has requested that I help them develop a class for graduating apprentices. The bottom line is that communication IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN OUR INDUSTRY! Probably yours too.
Am I a good boss? I think so. I am certainly a good teacher. The people I have trained are some of the best in the business. Our company just received a 100% customer satisfaction rating from Diamond Certified. Now, people are weird and satisfying most of them is almost impossible but 100%...We are very good and I am very proud of us.

I presently have three employees. One has worked for me for 10 years, one for seven-and-a-half and one for six. I consider them a second family. We're all quite close, actually.
