They say what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. So if you're really happening when you're there, does that mean you're stuck?

12. visit everyone!
just wander the country, talk to everyone! just pick a road and keep going until you find a nice place to stop for a bit to eat, you might be amazed at all the nice people. been thinking about doing it me self, but I'm still in college. Visit red, blue and in between states! just get out there, I think we need more people traveling-- I want to see what all of America has to offer.

14. if you came to Fort Worth
I would show you the nicest little museum complex..three art museums, a science museum and the CowGirl Hall of Fame within spitting distance of one another.

I would take you to Glen Rose to see the dinosaur footprints in the Paluxy River and if it is warm go swimming too.

I would take you to Sundance Square at night in downtown FW, very likely the safest downtown in the US, and always crowded and lively

I would take you to the Northside for the Cowboy part of FW, Stockyards,
and one of our two Little Mexicos

We would eat lots of Mexican food and chickenfried steak

I would take you to my nice liberal church, and with luck you could meet Jim Wright.

You could meet all the neat Democrats that worked so hard to try and turn this county blue.

If you like baseball we could go to the Ft Worth Cats or the Texas Rangers (the ballpark is neat, you can take a tour when the team is not playing )

You can go to Dallas, but I don't know why you would want to.

If it is spring you can drive a few miles south of here and see huge fields covered with bluebonnets, then go back about 4 weeks later and they are covered with gold and yellow flowers. I mean totally covered. (Thank you LadyBird)

There are several really neat tourist caves not too far from here, a nice short road trip

The coast is only 6 hours away.

Get lost in the Piney Woods

Get lost in the Big Bend

Go to Austin, which is in a blue county and mingle with the college kids, and visit the LBJ library, and the (other) LBJ Wildflower Center

In summer, enjoy concerts in the park at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden

In summer, attend a performance of the Hip Pocket Theatre ( a Yellow dog outfit if there ever was one)

Think of a hundred things to do instead of attend a Cowboys game.

Go to San Antonio and soak up some old Texas ambiance

Go to Mexico, it is only 11 hours away

Go to Arkansas and see the Clinton Library, Hot Springs and Hope

Avoid A & M and the Bush Senior library.

Ride an antique steam train.

Canoe the Trinity River

Now if I had some time, I could probably think of a few more!

LOL

I do like living in this city, despite the voting trends here. We do have a Democratic mayor, and Jim Wright still lives here.

16. LOL, all good Fort Worthers know exactly what to avoid
when showing visitors our lovely area.

We once had a newspaper publisher who took a sack lunch with him when he had to go to Dallas so he would not have to spend any money when he went there.

19. Yikes! All that stuff in Ft Worth?
I was there a few years ago and saw the cattle drive, my kid thought it would be funny to throw a firecracker under the cattle (I stopped him in time) and we discovered the big bars (the name of which I cannot remember). It was hot as hell (July 4th weekend) and I wish we knew about the Paluxy River. Dallas? Yeah, you're right. The only interesting thing there was Dick's Last Resort where the waitress threw napkins at us and convinced my wife to order a Blow Job.

29. Glen Rose/Paluxy River is about 35 miles south of Ft Worth
Dinosaur State Park is where the footprints are.

LOL firecracker under those lazy old Longhorns! Glad you stopped him!
I love the old vaqueros with their huge moustaches!

Big bars? Billy Bobs?

and yeah, July 4 is hot as hell, but August is hotter!!!!!

July 4 is when one of the best Concerts in the Garden is held..Sousa marches, fireworks, etc. picnic on the lawn..wonderful evening.

This year they had three "patriotic concerts', they have gotten so popular.

Sounds like you need to come back to North Texas and explore it again.

22. I second NSMA's question
I'll assume it's not real, but you never know with proles.

You certainly could visit us here in San Antonio.

As for sites, all that needs to be seen here is the beautiful Texas Hill Country and the hundreds of miles of scenic back-country roads for cycling.

Ok, there's some other things to see too, but they are all secondary.

27. Sorry for not responding
But my computer has been really spastic lately and it crashed, so I went to bed. I don't know about my job yet, but there is a real possibility I might. They are cutting a little more than half the staff. :-(

Even if I do manage to escape the axe, my pay will be reduced 20% — 10% permanent and 10% deferred until they can pay out, which would be at least a couple of years. The only thing that makes me even consider that is health insurance. I have both high blood pressure and asthma/allergies, which makes it imperative that I retain it. Under COBRA, I would have to come up with $450 per month to keep my coverage.

I'm already on a reduced schedule and I was cycling yesterday, I decided I would love to have more time to pursue it and have enough of a cushion to pursue it. I decided if I lost my job, I should take a road trip. Needless to say, I couldn't afford hotels, but I love to camp anyway. And there's nothing wrong with sleeping in the car if it's raining.

Who knows, maybe it would be good practice.

30. Yikes
The financial situation of your employer sounds very bad. I sincerely hope it's not as dire as it looks. But having seen similar situations, I don't think I can offer any comforting words. There's not likely to be much, if any, severance pay if they are that desperate for cash.

This must be a very distressing situation. $450/month for COBRA is atrocious! That'd be very hard to afford even with a decent, regular salary.

The road trip idea sounds like just the thing to do. I've gone through three layoffs in the last five years, and haven't done anything like that, but I wish I had. After the most recent layoff, I had enough experience with the concept that I did manage to just relax and enjoy the first few weeks of my new spare time. And it was well worth it, even though I did predictably revert to extreme anxiety once I began the job hunt in earnest and my partner quit her job as well.

It's amazing how hard it is to draw up a budget for two of us on a projected income of zero. I had never had to do that before last summer, and it was indeed scary. And I only had COBRA of $200+/month to worry about. In the end, I dodged that bullet and found a good job in the next few weeks. But it was a close call, and since another layoff could still happen at any time in the field I'm in, this prospect is never far away.

Good luck, and take care of yourself. Of course I know that there are few people on this planet as capable of handling such a situation as yourself, but still, we are all here for you.

Peter
