but it isn't as explicit as I thought judging by all the yelling and screaming, though.
But it does make you wonder - why would ABC take the chance? Didn't anyone stop and think "you know, this might be trouble"?

You see her back. That's it. Nothing else.
Take a chance? Do you think that it's okay that showing someones back is 'taking a chance' that it 'might be trouble'? Doesn't that disturb you? It should.
We are steadily moving towards censorship. We are seeing the morality of the Christian right being forced down our throats through the use legislation and fines.

My point is that even if it is an overreaction, someone HAD to know this would happen.

It's on at 7pm here in NM.
Also, the product isn't MNF, it's the NFL, which certainly does market itself to children.
Finally, if you would rather have your young child watch Desperate Housewives instead of sports, I guess that's your business. However, that wouldn't happen in my house. Different strokes, I guess.

Of course it markets to 8-year-old boys - it's football! Even our 4-year-old watches football with us but we don't expect to see anything sexually suggestive, and that dropping the towel was over the top for our family.

Anything sexually suggestive isn't appropriate for our kids. They kids know about beer because my husband drinks beer and they know it's wrong until they're 21-years-old. But selling sex in the opener was completely inappropriate.
And for what it's worth, commercials are something we watch with scrutiny and often tell our boys to close their eyes. We want our boys to keep their childhood and innocence as long as possible.

I just watched the online video-- I thought it was kind of dumb, but I'm not a footbal fan. What part of it would you not want an eight year old to see? A woman's bare shoulders and a millisecond or two of her bare upper back? There's more flesh than that on display at any beach or swimming pool. The fact that sexual attraction is an explicit part of the interaction? That's the subtext of nearly every nondocumentary program on television, and usually with major doses of violence thrown in as well.
I just don't understand what part of this you thought was inappropriate for an eight year old.

...an issue, but I have to say that this is certainly not the sort of thing I ever tried to shield her from when she was young, and she certainly heard equally risque banter from her mother and I on occasion!
Truthfully, I haven't had cable television since she was pretty young, so she would have been shielded from this, not because I think it's inherently inappropriate, but because I think most television content is too mind numbingly dumb (or violent, or devoted to making us good consumers, and so on) to waste time on.

What did I think was inappropriate? The suggestive voice, the conversation, the lack of priorities (fogetting the game for sex) and dropping the towel.
While there may be violence and sex on TV, our kids don't watch TV without us being present and we don't expect to see sexually suggestive TV as an opener for football. Hey - it's football!

I think it's inappropriate for the time and nature of the show.
I grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. Football isn't just for beer-swilling bachelors. A lot of families watch MNF every week. If I had children of TV-viewing age (I have a two-year-old daughter), I would have turned it off.
It's not that Nicolette Sheridan took off her towel and showed a little skin. What bothers me is the depiction of a multi-millionaire professional athlete skipping out on his job to go have sex. Apparently, sex trumps responsibility to an employer, responsibility to fans, and good sportsmanship. I don't think that's funny.
The completely casual nature of the sex bothers me too. Look, I'm a grown-up. I know what grown-ups do. I know plenty of people who have had one-night stands. I don't think this type of behavior should be on display in front of a football game.
I watch DH every week, and I enjoy the show. It can be a bit trashy, but it's fun. It's also obviously not for kids, and it starts later in the evening.
I'm not a prude. I'm not a person who's easily offended, but stuff like that has no business being put in front of a football game. Save it for adult-oriented programs or later in the evening.

18. this just re-affirms my theory that this was a calculated move. |

people should tell ABC to grow up.
if the fundies weren't there to screech, then maybe real adults would be heard.
I feel strongly that the world of adults has encroached way too heavily into the world of children with regard to video arts, but I don't know what the answer is. I was appalled at the sexualization of "The Cat in The Hat" with Mike Myers, the scene in the trailer where Myers opens the Mom's pic. like a centerfold...things like that put in children's movies offend me to no end, kids have a right to their own little universe, and sexualizing their stories and injection of adult sexuality into their territory is a violation, which most artists like this realize when they have kids of their own. I recently read a column by a journalist who was commenting on snoop dogg, I think, or another rapper who recently said he was cleaning up his act for his kids' sake. The journalist responded something like "it's great that you are concerned about your kids, but I wish you had been concerned about mine."

|
That's news to me. When my dad watched MNF when I was growing up, he always kicked me out of the living room. The reason was because he could swear when something didn't go his way with the team he liked. Plus, he drank beer and had friends over.
Unless families have dramatically changed in the last 22 years, I don't think children should be watching MNF.

There are plenty of other reasons kids shouldn't watch football (like the non-stop Levitra ads with the MILF writhing on the couch). But some kids like sports, and they look up to professional athletes. A kid in Philly is going to want to stay up and watch the Eagles on MNF.
I grew up in two states that are ruled by football. I love football (college ball, in particular). Attending ball games and watching them on TV is a family event for many.

but anybody who was watching with somebody too young for this scene could have easily turned the channel.
It was obvious to anybody with even half a brain where the scene was headed after the first shot of her in the towel.
A parent with a young child in the room could have easily turned channel for 3 minutes and protected their child from exposure to this adult themed promo.
I agree with everybody that the outrage over this MNF open is hollow. If people are so easily offended we need to remove most of the beer ads, most of the afternoon talk shows, most drug commercials, most feminine hygiene commercials, and all the afternoon soaps.

I used to watch soaps with my mom as a small child. These same people think Daytime tv is ok, but they don't like this? It's the same shit, just a different time of day. Who else watched soaps with their parents when they were kids?! I'm sure that tradition continues. They just pick and choose what they get offended by, and what's even dumber is that the idiots at the FCC have actually started listening to those idiots!! Duckie
