WORK RAGE - Let me vent please
Just got a call from my boss. One of my co-workers is leaving for another job, Friday is her last day. She has been working on an article for our company's newsletter for over a month. Since she is leaving, the powers that be decided that I should take over the article. That would be fine with me, but they told me 20 minutes ago about this, then added that I need to finish an article (2000 words) by tomorrow morning. I have never looked at the subject matter, and all I have is my co-workers research in a pile on my desk. I'll be here until midnight on this. I HATE THIS SHIT!!!

1. I've learned how to say 'no'
When there isn't enough time, there isn't enough time.

"I have plans after work that cannot be broken. Sorry."

Before you say, "but I'll get fired" let me tell you that I always got the big promotions because you're respected when you demand respect.

3. Good advise. Another way to frame it is to tell your boss what you
are currently working on and ask what the priority should be. Additionally establish a realistic time frame for completing the new assignment assuming it should be done properly.

5. Ohiosmith is right
Even a boss can understand that you can't write two articles simultaneously. Tell your boss what you're working on and what the deadline is, point that you'll have to get up to speed on the other article before you can even begin writing it, then put the ball back into his court by asking him which article should get done first.

7. And if you're told "Well, if you don't, you're fired", ask them
who they're going to get to write the one they need ASAP as well as yours along with their already overloaded workload . . .

8. I can work on the new article
ITs just that I will be here all night to get it done. I can;t say no. I can, but then my bonus will be reduced. It sucks, but that is the way it works here. It is a small partnership of bosses. They all agree on these issues. I am screwed into staying here for 15 hours today. I just needed to rant. I know your suggestions are meant to help, but they just won't work here.

14. You CAN Say 'No'
People do it all the time.

It's one thing for your boss to ask you to do this with advance notice, but with this little stunt, they are moving into the realm of controlling your personal schedule outside of working hours.

It's too late now to make up a lie, but if they were to try anything remotely like this in the future, all you do is say, "I'm sorry, but I have personal committments which can't be pushed aside." If they press you for details, all you have to say is that it's a personal matter.

If you don't establish boundaries, people will run them over anytime they're given a chance.

15. You don;t understand
My compensation is based upon working an 8 hour day, like most people. Then I get a bonus. That amount is based upon going beyond the call of duty. If I say no, thats fine. I don't get fired and I don't get lots of flack. However, I don't get a bonus. Last year my bonus was over twice my annual salary. My wife and I depend on it to live. This is the type of job I have. saying no is not an option if I want to keep the lifestyle I have. I often have to fly to some part of the country on a moments notice. That too is something I can refuse to do. People here refuse all the time. However, I have financial responsibilities to my family. I want to keep my house and give my family the best I can afford.

2. They probably want you to do it like a republican would.........
Make up a line of horseshit that they think the majority would buy into even if it isn't entirely the truth. "You can bullshit all of the people some of the time, etc ........"

9. I can do.
And I am doing it. I'll be here until midnight, get in tomorrow at 6:00 am and have it on his desk by 9:00. It won;t be the best work, but it will be done.
It just sucks is all.

13. Believe me, I understand. I hate deadlines, which is why I don't
do what you do. ON the other hand, it might also explain why my book is not yet finished. No one cracking the whip over me. *sigh*

16. i'm sorry. that sucks
I hope they are good to you at bonus time. You'll do OK. Just quit thinking about how fucked it is now so you can concentrate on the article. Think of how fucked it is when you've finished

:hi:

Good Luck!
