NEW! Hunting in Texas via the internet
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=583&ncid=583&e=3&u=/nm/20041117/od_nm/life_hunting_dc

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Hunters soon may be able to sit at their computers and blast away at animals on a Texas ranch via the Internet, a prospect that has state wildlife officials up in arms.

A controversial Web site, http://www.live-shot.com, already offers target practice with a .22 caliber rifle and could soon let hunters shoot at deer, antelope and wild pigs, site creator John Underwood said on Tuesday.

Underwood, an estimator for a San Antonio, Texas auto body shop, has invested $10,000 to build a platform for a rifle and camera that can be remotely aimed on his 330-acre (133-hectare) southwest Texas ranch by anyone on the Internet anywhere in the world.

"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that.' A little light bulb went off in my head," he said.

Internet hunting could be popular with disabled hunters unable to get out in the woods or distant hunters who cannot afford a trip to Texas, Underwood said.

2. Who tracks the deer if you just injure it?
I don't hunt, but I have friends who do. Four of them go to Alaska to hunt bear every year. Only one of them gets a bear tag...the other three track so they're sure they don't leave an injured animal out there.

Although I don't do it myself, I don't have a philosophical issue with hunting. Irresponsible hunting is another matter...

13. From their website:
At all times during a shooting session, someone is at the shooting station and is available to answer questions (e-mail, instant messaging), provide assistance, and ensure a quality experience. This person has the ability to override the firing mechanism of the system to minimize the chance of a dangerous or illegal discharge from occurring.

Also, it says that "If you are unable to use the meat for yourself, a donation can be made to either The Hunters for the Hungry program or to the Wild Animal Orphanage." That's a good thing, I guess, but still...

15. Maybe they'll track an injured animal for miles, too, but I kinda doubt it
Hell, who knows?

7. That isn't hunting.
I grew up on a ranch in Texas, and hunted. I don't hunt now because it costs too much, but if I could cheaply hunt, I would. This isn't hunting. There are no brushcraft skills involved. No learning the habits of the game animal, no stalking, no enduring cold wet weather, no holding yourself absolutely still as the deer approaches within range. Nothing. Bah!!! It is empty. Meaningless.

11. This part just burns me....
"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that.'

How many people think that. "damn, there's a cute little deer. I sure wish I could shoot it".

I don't have a problem with a person hunting to provide for their families (indeed, I would wager that many people who hunt for that reason know a fair bit about preserving nature), but sport hunting is fucking abhorrent to me.

12. So, it's not really about "nature" or "the wilderness"
Is it? It's just about killing something. Nice.

Additionally, it sounds a little like canned hunting without the exotic animals.

16. Depends on what you mean by "it"
I'm not sure what to call this remote-control shooting business, but it bears no resemblence to the hunting I'm familiar with.

14. This would be a good idea if he used a camera rather than a gun.
Where is the "sport" in remotely gunning down an animal? I would think this would be easy to outlaw. Can't believe even the NRA types would defend this (but I wouldn't be that surprised if they did).
