An Indianapolis woman who wrote books about how to profit from government loopholes is accused of stealing almost $83,000 from the Social Security Administration.
Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said Dianne Holmes-Despain fraudulently obtained benefits by claiming an illness left her unable to work.
While collecting benefits, she wrote books and magazine articles and taught continuing education courses at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Brizzi said.
"All the time she was trying to keep her true identity secret from Social Security," Brizzi said.
Holmes-Despain, 51, was charged with corrupt business influence, theft, welfare fraud, conspiracy to commit welfare fraud and 14 counts of forgery.
Her husband, Joel J. Despain, 43, also was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy to commit welfare fraud. Her bond was set at $15,000, his at $5,000.
