More than 70 bucks are displayed
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 12:18 PM by Sequoia
More than 70 bucks are displayed at Knutson's Buck Pole in Brooklyn, Mich. Hunters bring bucks to the outdoor supply store on opening day of firearm deer season to be weighed and displayed on the pole.

This is from the Day in Pictures of the SF Gate (click on photo top right and click to photo)

This disgusting photo is from the Jackson Citizen-Patriot in Brooklyn, MI at Knutson's Buck Pole.

Would you rather have 70 (or 700 or 7000) bucks, does, and fawns die from disease and/or starvation due to overcrowding because no natural predators exist to reduce their numbers?

6. I don't mind hunting
People eat meat. People in rural areas hunt for their meat. I think you could make a good argument that that behavior is less cowardly than going to the grocery store and buying a pound of hamburger, all wrapped in plastic and sanitized and carrying no trace of the "psychological taint" of killing (we can all pretend that our own hands aren't bloody...)

What bothers me about this picture and about some hunters I have met is the bragging and the display and the clear joy in killing. There's something very wrong about that.

If I were living in a rural area, I might hunt. I am a member of a predator species and I eat meat. But I would never take psychological pleasure in the death I caused, nor would I brag about it, or use my kill to achieve status in the eyes of other people.

7. Here in central Iowa we are up to our kesters' in deer.
They've become such a problem in some cities in the state that urban bow-hunting rules are being enforced. Since we, meaning the white American population in general, have killed off their natural predators, invaded their natural habitat and provided them with all sorts of tasty foods there is nothing left but to control their population.

I find nothing disgusting about the above picture. I would find photos of deer dying from starvation, due to overgrazing, much more disgusting.

And, no, I don't think birth control pills are a viable option.
BTW, I no longer hunt.

8. It's disgusting because it strips the dignity from life.
I understand vegetarianism isn't for everyone. I don't want to force that belief on anyone. If you eat meat, to me it doesn't matter whether you get it from the store or from the wilderness. At least the deer shot in the wilderness lived free.

However, to then go and display it like that is just...sick. It's making a game out of death. If one has to eat animals, fine. But what's the point of dragging a carcass of anything around?

10. Because some hunters actually think their prey is beautiful.
I know several deer hunters who take pictures of their kill only because of the beauty of it. Deer are very powerful, very sleek animals and many hunters admire them even in death. Just because their idea of honoring them differs from yours doesn't make them wrong or immoral.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 12:58 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
I agree, deer are extremely beautiful. Alive. But something that is dead? I fail to see how you can honor something by treating it as a trophy and dragging its body around. But regardless, this particular picture is not of people "honoring deer" or finding beauty in them. This picture is of deer lined up as objects and being weighed so the hunter can feel good about himself. There is something wrong with that. Killing to feel good?

13. I still don't think you understand.
I myself don't find any beauty in the death of a deer, but SOME PEOPLE DO and I can begin to understand where that comes from. You can sit in judgement of whether this picture and the hunters are "honoring" the deer, but that doesn't mean your view is the only valid one.

15. SOME people find beauty in the death of a human
You need only look at some of the reactions to the Iraq war to see that. SOME people find beauty in minors in sexually explicit ways. Sometimes a differing opinion just isn't acceptable.

And hunting for the sake of eating is different than just shooting an animal to display it. I said that in my other posts. Perhaps you should read the whole thread before jumping to conclusions. Also, personal attacks aren't welcome on DU, so maybe you should reread the rules.
Here, I'll make it really really easy for you:

As in directed towards another DUer. Nothing in post 12 is directed at anyone else.

Your post was directed to me.

And as far as the argument is concerned, your concerns were
1.) If I eat meat and don't like this picture I am a hypocrite
Well I don't eat meat
2.) hunting is a good way to get meat and is better than farms
Well I had said that much earlier in the thread.

Therefore, what else would you like me to argue?

46. Trophies?
I've taken well over 100 deer. I have not one single solitary trophy unless you want to count either what's in my freezer or the things my wife has made from the hides I've tanned or the antlers she's carved for buttons, knife handles, etc.

We generally use the whole thing for food and other useful purposes. Granted, some are decorative - such as knife handles - but the knives get used almost daily.

My dog gets the bones.

If not, total hypocrisy.

People who eat meat and are offended by this picture are like people who support the war but don't want to see the body count or the pictures of dead soldiers.

Face facts.

And for the record, I'm not a vegetarian.

And I've never hunted deer, unless you count hitting one on the interstate.

Deer cubes:
Cube up some filet'd deer meat into 2" x 2" cubes. Butterfly them open halfway. Put a slice of a jalapeno(no seeds)in the opening. Wrap the cube in a half or a whole piece of bacon(I use cheap bacon for this).Toothpick the bacon on it or use a skewer and shiskebob 6 or 7 on the skewer. Marinate 3 or 4 hours in Lawry's herb and garlic marinade. Cook over charcoal. Watch them carefully because the bacon drips and they will take off on you. They cook in about 10 minutes depending on the intensity of your charcoals. Serve over a bed of wild rice. Yummy.

37. Here's what I see...
A bunch of fat fucking idiots, gloating over their ability to take high-powered rifles/bows and eliminate another life. I see folks that, if it came to a fair fight, would lose, overwhelmingly, to the wildlife they seek to "conserve" <cough...bullshit...cough>.

Now, to those that honestly hunt for food, I wouldn't suggest this. That's a little different. You deer piss-drenched trophy hounds, enjoy your feelings of greatness, as the domination of defenseless herbivores is the only place you can get it, I guess.

And yeah, I'm a vegan, and I don't touch meat. Shove "hypocrisy" up your ass. Why are there so many animals that need "eliminating" now due to shortages of food and habitat? Cuz your fat ass just built another subdivision. No diff than WalMart...

This glorification of violence and praise of death just pisses me off (did you guess that already)?
