Graaaaaak!! Just saw a car commercial using The Clash!!!
Nooooooooooooooooooo

Pontiac using 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' to sell cars. Just on now.

A few years ago I saw a Jaguar ad using 'London Calling' and wanted to flush myself down the toilet. Here we go again.

Fuckers. God damn. Nothing is sacred anymore.

2. You know, Will...
the copyright is expiring on all these old songs. You'll note they're all from the same era. It's not the bands selling these songs to be used in ads. It's that they don't have control over what happens to them anymore.

8. I hear you.
It's the way of capitalism, unfortunately. Nothing is sacred, not if you can sell a PT Cruiser with it!

18. Well, some of them are.
But the ones Will is referencing are copyright expiration.

Michael Jackson sold "Revolution" to Nike too.

6. The Boomers had Nike using the Beatles to get outraged about.
We'll surely have our share. Sucks, though. Among the more inexplicable ones I've seen was Black Flag's "Rise Above" in a Sega ad.

Did Holiday Inn ever wind up using that Dead Kennedy's song?
That incident prompted the band members to sue each other, it'd seem a waste if they didn't go ahead and use that entirely inappropriate tune.

9. I hear ya'...
But not all car commercials are bad. I still think the VW "Pink Moon" commercial was way cool. Turned a lot of people on to Nick Drake, which is a good thing.

But I agree... the Clash, The Who and Zeppelin hardly needed the additional exposure (or the money).

11. Here's what bothers me about it all
I was born in the early 60's and at that time, rock and roll was the language of rebellion. Now, of course, it's the language of capitalism.

When I was young, I saw an entire generation rise up and protest the way things were - the war, the environment, civil rights, you name it. It was hard and the people in charge didn't take these people very seriously - "damn hippie radicals" my father always called them. But they managed to change the world.

I always believed that when my generation came to power, things would be different. The whales WOULD be saved, there would be no nukes, Tibet would be free - you know? I thought we'd be the generation to take this country into a better future.

It never in my wildest dreams occurred to me that we might have a man like GW Bush as President when it was our turn. How could that be? There were so many of us!

It's not just the music that sold out, Will. Seems like a whole lot of us did.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 01:58 PM by MadAsHellNewYorker
That made we gag in revulsion.

It has a 10 year old "Jimi Hendrix" choose pepsi over coke and inferred pepsi was the reason he started to play guitar.

GROSS :puke:

27. ben folds can sum up the generation that sold out
The Ascent of Stan

Pangs of silence
From the room upstairs
How's the view there?
Do you read what they're saying about you?
That you're no fun
Since the war was won
In fact, you have become all of the things you've always run away from

The ascent of Stan
Textbook hippie man
Get rest while you can

So where'd the years go?
All the time we had?
Being poor was not such a drag in hindsight
And you wonder why your father was so resigned
Now you don't wonder any more

The ascent of Stan
Textbook hippie man
Textbook hippie man
Get rest while you can

Stan: Once you wanted revolution
Stan: Now you're the institution
Stan: How's it feel to be the man?
It's no fun to be the man

And now, watch it all go down

The ascent of Stan
Textbook hippie man
(Stan)
Textbook hippie man
Get rest while you can

Stan: Once you wanted revolution
Stan: Now you're the institution
Stan: How's it feel to be the man?

It's no fun to be the man
