you're going to put hundreds of sauerkraut workers out of a job?

That's just selfish!

38. That's how my wife makes it
Just like that. She's 1/2 German and 1/2 Czech and grew up on a farm, so it's kind of "in her blood" so to speak.

I also like it on brats and on Ruebens. Can't beat that with a sharp pointy stick!

11. Great Sauerkraut Recipe
Drain and wash Kraut thoroughly
slice one large onion and brown
2 slices bacon cooked

Combine washed kraut, fried onion, crumbled bacon with a little white wine or beer and cook in slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours.

It really is very good.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 02:59 PM by Kellanved
Or probably more like Gourmet's Purgatory with Italy and France on the one hand, as well as England on the other hand nearby.

Well, personally I'm a big fan of Liver and Blutwurst, but as with almost all German culinary (solid as well as liquid) things, they were created because of the famine during the 30 year war.

Edit: improved (I hope so at least) the wording.

32. Now i'm offended.
While i agree that the french cuisine is better than ours and the italian is compareable to ours,
never ever compare us to the english ! Never! Ever! Is that clear ? :-)

BTW we export that stuff so we don't have to eat it. :-)

Ok, you're in Swabia, so you have an advantage culinary-wise. Funny that most people assume that there is just one German cuisine.

And, I did not exactly compare anything to England, just tried illustrate the extremes.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 03:19 PM by haktar
the assumtion that the local "specialities" in many german regions
are quite strange stuff is correct. If You like, google our former Kanzler Helmut Kohl and check was his favorite dish was. :puke:

Also: I never left a restaurant in England hungry, i simply find it funny for example to get chips with a lasagne. :-)

And BTW. i was not really offended, i was amused!

This is the Lounge after all; I'd never assume that someone is serious in here

On Edit: The one thing I was not able to get over in England: the Bread - even worse than stateside.

18. If you did like it, how would your life be different?
If I had liked sauerkraut, as a child, I would have spent less time outdoors, on Wednesdays during Lent. My mom always cooked a big pot of it for the weekly Lenten potlucks, and it really stunk the place up. Who knows how different my life might be, today, if the smell of sauerkraut hadn't forced me out of the house?

26. As a child, I hated it. Now I like it.
I went to a Catholic school with German-Catholic cooks, and we got sauerkraut up the wazoo. I wouldn't touch it for years. However, reubens have reclaimed me for sauerkraut.

Besides, I have to reserve my true hatred for beets. Not only did those cooks also give us beets up the wazoo, the penguins (nuns) made us eat them -- including once forcing me to eat beets, causing me to vomit the beet poison back up. I have ever since totally rejected beets.

Beets: evil, evil, evil food!

31. Try this!
Split and saute some Polish Kielbasa in olive oil & garlic and onion.

Add a large jar of Gundelsheim Kraut (rinse well first)

Add a cup or three of reisling or other semi-sweet wine

Add about a cup of golden raisins and two sliced up firm apples (I like Braeburns)

Add a little thyme, basil and salt/pepper to taste and simmer for about 20 minutes till some of the liquid/wine cooks down.

Enjoy
