Bush Pardons Two Thanksgiving Turkeys
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=544&ncid=703&e=6&u=/ap/20041117/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_turkey_pardon

President Bush used the annual Thanksgiving turkey- pardoning rite Wednesday to roast the bitter campaign for the White House, jokingly recalling fund-raising disputes, attack ads and a polarizing political movie. "Now's the time for healing," he said, as he ceremonially spared two birds.

The winning "candidates" in his satirical rendition of the presidential campaign were Biscuits and Gravy, turkeys raised in Mathias, W.Va. Their names came out on top on an online contest. "It was a close race. You might say it was neck and neck," Bush said. He spoke in the Rose Garden during a rare joint appearance with Vice President Dick Cheney.

"It came down to a few battleground states. It was a tough contest, and it turned out some 527 organizations got involved, including Barnyard Animals for Truth," Bush said, mocking the free-spending independent groups like Swiftboat Veterans for Truth known as 527s. The group raised questions about Democrat John Kerry's service in the Vietnam War.

"There was a scurrilous film that came out, 'Fahrenheit 375 Degrees At 10 Minutes Per Pound,'" he said, panning "Fahrenheit 9/11," the documentary film that assailed him over the handling of the Sept. 11 attacks and the war on terrorism.

This part's precious, too:

The turkeys Bush pardoned last year died within three months after their "pardons," a result of drugs that make them grow excessively, the group said.
............

Do we ALL eat that drug?

and, like a lot of other factory-farmed animals, they live horrible, cramped and suffering lives, and then are killed in a painful manner. people need to wake up to this. It's kept quietly under the public's radar but when more people start getting informed about this that industry will be made to abide by humane standards not yet in place.

They're fed drugs. Their living and dying conditions are exploitative and cruel. And humans ingesting them are ingesting these problems, e.g., that is a cause for the growing human resistance to antibiotics, etc.

What you can do, for starters: Adopt a turkey:
Farm Sanctuary has a program where you can adopt a turkey and they'll send you a picture of it, etc. It's a small step, but every little bit of increased awareness helps. http://www.adoptaturkey.org/

The Humane Farming Assn is another source of info:http://www.hfa.org/about/index.html

What an odd, intent expression he has...he looks totally homicidal. He clearly relishes the power he has of life and death over living creatures. Either that or he is trying to perform the Vulcan mind meld on the bird (they presumably think on the same level).

I've noticed that more and more often lately, he has adopted his "head tilted over hand limply extended as if blessing someone or something" pose.

He's gotten quite odd lately- one day he thinks he's the Pope, the next he's the omnipotent King of the World. He's nuts.

I live here in TX and heard about it in the paper first.

Was it childish for Bush to do that? Sure. Was it immature? Yeah, obviously.

Was it really terrible? No.

45. Not only was it childish and immature, it was hypocritical.
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 04:55 PM by Beware the Beast Man
Bush, a so-called Born-Again Christian and self-proclaimed compassionate conservative, mocking a woman who, definitely guilty in the eyes of the law, had turned to religion and was simply asking for a stay of execution, not to be freed for her crime. Just the fact that the governor of one of the largest states in this nation acted in such a fashion is sickening.

46. No
I would have acted the same way, and I'm not a Born-Again Christian.

Compassion for criminals is spitting in the face of victims. It's okay though. You just cared more about her rights than her victim's rights. She didn't have a "right" not to be mocked.

And what good would a stay do? All it's doing is delaying the execution. She didn't have any new evidence.

I actually laughed when I read it in Talk.

I mean, really now, Beast Man. Why should I have felt sorry for her?

47. I do not care more for her rights .
This has little to do with her and more to do with an elected official acting like a condescending jerk when being interviewed by the press. It's not just the KFT situation either. I agree with you. She was guilty of murder, and she was punished. There's a certain unwritten protocol to being an elected official, and Bush has proven to violate that protocol on numerous occasions. He is a man with no integrity, no scruples and no class. And the KFT issue is one example of that. I'm sorry, but if I were responsible for issuing the termination of one's life, no matter how hardened they may be, I would not crack jokes about it.
