I just got a call from my older stepson. They admitted their little 6 month old to the hospital, because his apnea monitor went off. Some of you already know that their first baby died of SIDS about 18 months ago. You can imagine what they must be going through now!

They're hoping that the monitor simply couldn't detect his breathing, because it was very shallow. As soon as the monitor went off, it woke him, and they heard him breathe deeply. At least with him in the hospital, and a hyper-sensitive monitor rigged up, they can get him breathing again.

They were given a hospital monitor to use early on; but they wanted him to be as comfortable as possible, and the heavy-duty monitors use wires and that nasty tape that is awfully tough on a baby's skin. Since things seem iffy right now, they figure it's best to have him hooked up to the more sensitive unit, though.

and to your grandson. My eldest was on an apnea monitor for many months. This was 17 years ago so I assume the monitors have improved much. The monitor had constant false alarms. If you didn't put it on just right or she moved too much, then the alarm would go off. Many hugs to you and your stepson and his wife. I know how traumatic this is. :hug:

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers...Each one is so precious to me! :grouphug:

My daughter-in-law is staying in the hospital tonight with little Nicholas; and they'll determine tomorrow whether he comes home or not. They may decide to keep him on the hospital monitor after they return home, just to be on the safe side. Fortunately, Nicholas' mom is a nurse, and well-trained to resucitate him in an emergency.

At 6 months, he's passed the age when SIDS most frequently occurs; but it has been known to strike between 6 months and a year. Considering what they've been through in the last two years, it's easy to understand how worried they are.
