Favorite Black & White Movie?
Why should technicolor have all the fun?

Hard to choose, but I think I would ahve to pick *Some Like It Hot.* Marilyn Monroe AND Jack Lemmon in a dress tangoing with a rose between his teeth. What's not to love?

C ya,

THat's a good one!
But very sad. I feel so bad for Shirley MacLaine's character. She actually looked kinda cute, once upon a time.

That's the way it crumbles, cookie-wise,

31. jack lemmon, and henry fonda were the quintessential american actors
few actors can do comedy and drama equally as well as lemmon could, lemmon moved easily in both styles, only tom hanks comes close, maybe jeff bridges, but who else?

the best line from the apartmanr ..."be a mensch!"

if you want to see maclaine as her bestest and sweetest, ...... "some came running"

3. "One, Two, Three"
Quite possibly the best comedy ever.

Cagney as Coca-Cola Manager in pre-wall post-war Berlin, Horst Buchholz as young Communist, Liselotte Pulver as Fräulein Wunder secretary and and and

Also one of the very few movies that are equally good in English and in German - with very different gags in each version.

21. God, I Remember That from When I Was a Kid
my whole extended family was laughing hysterically. Everyone agreed it was the best movie ever.

The only scene that sticks out to me now is when someone was being tortured by being forced to listen to "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini" over and over. (Was that the same film?)

47. That truly is the most moving song in the movie.
As for Mahalia, she is phenomenal.

And Juanita Moore's performance is absolutely brilliant.

Here is her biography, courtesy of IMDb.com.

African American actress Juanita Moore entered films in the early 50's, a time in which few black people were ever given an opportunity to act with major studio films. Fortunately Moore's roles began improving as Hollywood developed a social consciousness toward the end of the decade. In 1959 she received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Imitation of Life (1959), a glossy updating of a once controversial Fannie Hurst novel about racism. Within the next decade Hollywood underwent several sociological upheavals, and Juanita Moore was one of the beneficiaries. She became a fixture of such black oriented films of the 70's as Up Tight! (1969), Thomasine and Bushrod (1974) and Abby (1974). She recently appeared in Disney's The Kid (2000). Moore is semi retired. She has also been in over 30 other motion pictures.

65. La Belle et la Bête and Orpheé
and Casablana. I know thjat's 3 and really, since I love the movies of the 30s the best and 40s the 2nd best I could do a list.

I like La Belle et la Bête because it was made in France right after WWII and Cocteau had to scramble for supplies, including electricity and film. He shot half the film on Agfa and half Kodak. One of the coolest scenes was shot among drying bed linens that were also in short supply. Most of the main people in the movie became ill during the shoot.
The same cinematographer (Henri Alekan) worked on 'Wings of Desire', another favourite of mine. The circus was called after him in that movie.

Orpheé was a cool movie. The story is amazing and Cocteau had to invent some special effects.

74. So many great movies have already been mentioned...
...but I'd just like to add "Raging Bull" and "The Battle of Algiers" since no one has got to them, yet.

79. To Kill A Mockingbird
What a great movie- I watched it a few weeks ago with my 13 year old daughter, She was in tears at the end and so was I. Ah for someone with the intelligence and dignity of Atticus Finch.

87. Arsenic and Old Lace
"Insanity runs in my family. It practically gallops."

I also really like the French B&W movie called La Belle et La Bete. I just love the walk down the hall in the castle with the human arms holding the candelabras...super cool and spooky...they move with her as she walks!
