Dude, I want a Dell
I am in the market for a laptop computer and I want one NOW and Dell has some good deals.

Is it really bad for me to buy one, given that the CEO is supposedly a Bush supporter?

If so, what other brands would you recommend?

10. As a Mac owner...
If you're a hardcore gamer or something like that, it's not a good idea.

If you're looking for productivity, I'd say it's the way to go.

14. The compatibility issue is a big one for me.
If I'm on my spankin' new and pretty Mac laptop, and I save something on a disk, I better hope I never want to work on it on the desktop, at work, etc..

That's the number one thing keeping me from buying one.
Kind of hijacked here, but I'm interested in hearing the answer to your question.

24. Save something in what program?
Anything saved in Microsoft Office for the mac can be opened in MS Office for the PC. Anything saved in Adobe for the mac can be opened for Adobe in the PC. The same is true for Macromedia. As long as it's the same program on both computers, there should be no problem in sharing platforms. Even Appleworks documents, Apple's native word processing program, can be opened in Microsoft Word.

21. Mac's are more expensive
but they are worth it. They never crash or get viruses and they come equipped with the ability to edit movies, create music, and organize and sort music and photos. Trust me when I say, you don't want a Dell. If you do decide to get a PC get it from somewhere else, but avoid Dell and Gateway like the plague. I had a Gateway and it was a nightmare. My girlfriend has a Dell and it makes HAL 9000 look like a cooperative machine.

Mac's are good machines. I've used both platforms and the mac is way better, mainly because it just works. The only drawback to them is gaming, but most of the really big titles make it to the mac eventually.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 09:17 PM by NEDem
I wouldn't buy anything else. Nothing comes close to the reliability. I am fortunate that I get to use business tech support, no more calls to India, but I wouldn't buy anything else.

6. I know it not the most popular thing to say....
But I'd just go ahead and buy one. I got a new Latitude D800 a couple months ago and it is absolutely amazing. Sure he CEO supports the shrub, but I doubt EVERYONE there does, and IMHO they really do make the best computers.

Go ahead, look at it this way, if we boycotted every single business that supported the shrub, we'd be completely f@cked.

22. Giving Bush some money is one thing, shipping jobs to India is another...
Dell could have kept those tech jobs here and it wouldn't have made the slightest dent in his BILLIONS. But hell no,everyone else was going the India route so why not DELL. Besides, save enough money using cheap India labor and get a new Gulfstream!!

Guess he had to finally bring them back, bad service and bitching from customers I guess but as far as I'm concerned the damage is done,I'll never buy from the ass. Shipping out those jobs wasn't about "saving" Dell,it was just another corporation that could give a shit about their employee's.

15. Go to their online Outlet Store
Register there, and check out their refurbished laptops.

I got one there a couple of years ago, saved about $1500, and the tech support is wonderful. It's a grand machine.

It's minimal profit for Dell, and a good deal for the buyer.

http://www.discountlaptops.com/

Now look at their rating on Reseller Ratings. Remember Dell doesn't build these laptops, they might stick the HD and a couple of other items in but their all made by one or two companies,I think Sager is one of them.

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller3507-p1-s3-d1.html

Screw Mike fucking Dell,GD billionaire and ships all their support work over to India. Remember when Dell ran those TV commercials with the new guys wanting to work in tech support, then those commercials suddenly disappeared? Disappeared all the way to India.

Way to go MIKE,shit can Americans so you can hire people from India.I've heard they recently brought it back to the US,you know they had to be getting a lot of heat and losing customers for that to happen. I wouldn't buy a dog house from that billionaire bastard.

20. I used to work there
They are the Wal-Mart of computer manufacturers. Part of the business model is waiting until the last possible second to pay vendors so they can squeeze every penny of interest out of their money. They're quite heavy-handed and demanding, because they can be.

Management is predominantly white men. While that's no surprise, I also found them to be mysogynistic and hostile toward single mothers. OK, I guess that's no surprise either. :P

Leaving Dell was the best thing I ever did! Good riddance.

Yes, Michael Dell is a super-duper * supporter. He and his trophy wife, who he'd never have landed but for his millions, attended the first coronation. Most of my co-workers were hard-core freepers, addicted to consumption and materialism. It was all about the almighty dollar. I was definitely among the minority but not afraid to speak out. Hmmm, maybe that was part of the problem as well?

This year I gave up PCs and switched to a Mac PowerBook. I love it and will never go back. I highly recommend it for several reasons, including the fact that I don't have to worry about all those Windows-based viruses floating around the internet(s).

Good luck! Stay away from Dell if you can. BTW, Apple donates heavily to progressive causes.

29. More questions for Red Viking!
OK, but if I switch to Mac, what kinds of issues am I going to have with compatibility?

Also - for someone who has never ever touched a Mac, is it a lot different? Will I become annoyed and toss it out the window?

Thanks!

25. Dell's reputation has really gone down the toilet.
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 09:40 PM by strategery blunder
I bought my Inspiron about three months before I really became aware that Dell out$ources and supports $hrub (five months before I found DU). As far as the computer itself, I haven't had any problems (well, actually I managed to break off one of the keys less than an hour after getting it out of the box, but I was able to fix that in fifteen minutes with two paper clips and no call to tech support, lol).

I bought a dell because they offered the best specs for the money, and my uncle has a really old 266 MHz Dell. He is only now starting to run into problems with the CD and hard drive starting to wear out--I thought this was pretty damn good.

But a couple of months after I bought my Dell, I started to hear the tech support horror stories. I must confess that I was afraid to call tech support after the L key came off less than an hour after opening the box (mostly out of personal shame), but I was able to fix the problem with some creative thinking.:) I am thankful that I haven't really had to call tech support yet.

I won't go mac because I'm an avid gamer, and 80% of games are made for the winblow$ platform. If it wasn't for games, I'd give up winblow$ in a second.

26. I thought this was a Jon Stewart thread!
Guess you had to see the show about Star Jones' marriage.

Jon was harping on the fact that Star had so many product supporters doing her whole marriage thingie that on her wedding night, out popped a guy from an area I will not repeat, saying, "Dude, you've got a Dell".
