4. Have you heard DOA's version?
The recorded it in the early 80s, and also performed it at one of Vancouver's anitwar rallies in early 2003.

A tad punkier than the original.

36. My vote, too. Saw them live, in 68. Huge crowd sing-along!
1-2-3- what are we fightin' for?
Don't ask me
I don't give a damn
Next stop, Vietnam

And it's 5-6-7 open up your pearly gates
Ain't got time to wonder why
Whoopee
We're all gonna die...

Maybe we could change it to"

1-2-3 what are we fightin' for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a crap
Next stop, downtown Iraq

Well, someone else can try, too.
Could be a new anthemn.
When the draft starts up.

15. Not quite a protest song...

"The Faith"
(Based on a Québecois folk song)
Words and music by Leonard Cohen

The sea so deep and blind
The sun, the wild regret
The club, the wheel, the mind,
O love, aren't you tired yet?

The club, the wheel, the mind
O love, aren't you tired yet?

The blood, the soil, the faith
These words you can't forget
Your vow, your holy place
O love, aren't you tired yet?

The blood, the soil, the faith
O love, aren't you tired yet?

A cross on every hill
A star, a minaret
So many graves to fill
O love, aren't you tired yet?

So many graves to fill
O love, aren't you tired yet?

The sea so deep and blind
Where still the sun must set
And time itself unwind
O love, aren't you tired yet?

And time itself unwind
O love, aren't you tired yet?

17. The Call Up -
It's up to you not to heed the call-up
'N' you must not act the way you were brought up
Who knows the reasons why you have grown up?
Who knows the plans or why they were drawn up?

It's up to you not to heed the call-up
I don't wanna die!
It's up to you not to hear the call-up
I don't wanna kill!

For he who will die
Is he who will kill

Maybe I wanna see the wheatfields
Over Kiev and down to the sea

All the young people down the ages
They gladly marched off to die
Proud city fathers used to watch them
Tears in their eyes

There is a rose that I want to live for
Although, God knows, I may not have met her
There is a dance an' I should be with her
There is a town - unlike any other

It's up to you not to hear the call-up
'N' you must not act the way you were brought up
Who give you work an' why should you do it?
At fifty five minutes past eleven
There is a rose...
Yeah!

23. Flag Decal Heaven - by John Prine
Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore
© John Prine
While digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.
Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
Well, I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier he said to me,
"If you join the Christmas club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free."
Well, I didn't mess around a bit
I took him up on what he said.
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife's forehead.
Repeat Chorus:
Well, I got my window shield so filled
With flags I couldn't see.
So, I ran the car upside a curb
And right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said...
"But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
We're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more."

I think George Michael or some pop guy covered it recently. But that doesn't make it any less powerful.

I'll cover myself
With the mud and the earth
I'll cover myself
I KNOW I'M NOT BRAVE
The earth
The earth
The earth is my grave...

38. Everybody Look What's Going Down
(this one was going through my head last night)

by Buffalo Springfield

there's something happening here. what it is ain't exactly clear. there's a man with a gun over there. telling me i got to beware. its time we stop, hey, what's that sound? everybody look what's going down. paranoia strikes deep. into your heart it will creep. it happens when you're always afraid. step out of line and the man comes to take you away. stop, hey, what's that sound? everybody look what's going down. its time we stop, hey, what's that sound? everybody look what's going down. stop, hey, what's that sound? everybody look what's going down.

Also many songs by Ed Sanders and the Fugs:

"I don't want to sing any songs
against America,
Because it's been so good to me.
But you know
sometimes
it dips its hands in blood."
- the Fugs

and the Fugs, "River of Shit"

and Amen to Phil Ochs! and the Weavers!!!

43. "Untitled Protest", Country Joe and the Fish.
Untitled Protest – Country Joe and the Fish, “Together”, August 1968

Red and swollen tears tumble from her eyes
While cold silver birds who came to cruise the skies
Send death down to bend and twist her tiny hands
And then proceed to target B in keeping with their plans

Khaki priests of Christendom, interpreters of love
Ride a stone Leviathan across a sea of blood.
And pound their feet into the sands of shores they’ve never seen,
Delegates from the Western lands to join the death machine.

And we send cards and letters.

The oxen lie beside the road, their bodies baked in mud.
And fat flies chew out their eyes, and bathe themselves in blood.
And super heroes fill the skies, tally sheets in hand,
Yes, keeping score in times of war takes a super man.

The junk crawls past sudden death, its cargo shakes inside.
And soldier children hold their breath, and kill them as they hide.
And those who took so long to learn the subtle ways of death
Lie and bleed in paddy mud with questions on their breath.

And we send prayers and praises.

'Nuff said. :hippie: NoD
