Poll question: A "Chick Car"?
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 11:54 PM by libbygurl
What makes a "chick car"?

Male respondents--would you mind driving such a vehicle? Does it lessen your manhood?

Nice to meet a fellow Cabrio lover! Ever since Stephanie Zimbalist tooled around town in that white Cabriolet on TV's "Remington Steele", I'd always lusted after one for myself.

9. I voted Honda Element.
As I only know of women who like it. They think it looks like it has lots of interior room, and like that it is, essentially, a CRV, which has a good mechanical reputation.

Of course, I may be saying this because, as a guy, I'm defending my ownership of a Miata. ;)

40. The 55 - 56 Dodge "La Femme"

From the Brochure:

By appointment to her majesty...the American woman!"

"Never a car more distinctively feminine than La Femme...first fine car created exclusively for women! In this superbly designed car, Dodge brings together luxurious, delicately-toned interiors and ultra-fashionable appointments...every sophisticated touch your heart could desire! Here is, truly, the ultimate in fine motoring."

Came with a rain-cape, umbrella, and hand bag that matched the interior of the car.

Naturally women saw right through the marketing campaign, and men wouldn't be caught dead driving one, so the "La Femme" died a quick and much deserved demise.

42. It's odd that the three leading vote getters are so not chick cars.
At least from my POV. (BTW, I voted Beetle).

A Cabriolet is a great car for people who want a solid but compact convertible.

The Miata is a car known for it's racing heritage. I'd drive a Miata in a second, but only if it had a manual transmission.

And a Hummer? I don't get that at all. I don't think I've ever seen a woman behind the wheel of one of those.

Yeah, the Hummer puzzles me. That is so Ahnold-macho-type, and it might just be some jokester votes up there.

The Miata strikes me more as one for the GUYS (as my SO likes it).

54. It may be that 75% of the people who buy Cabrio's are women....
But that still doesn't make it a chick car. Does it? Is there something inherently 'chickish' about that car? I dunno.

There's no other compact convertible on the market that seats 4 is there? If that's what you're looking for, that's what you have to buy.

My idea of a chick car is a small Saturn, or a Corolla. At least, that's what I see most women driving around here.

And whatever kind of car it is, it must be an automatic. Very few women drive manual transmissions anymore. Gee, there only a few of us guys who prefer to drive a stick nowadays.

46. Heard something on NPR recently
...about how cars are marketed to women and men. I think the story was about a Mercedes model--they were going to change the marketing so that it would appeal more to men. If a car appeals more to men, they can always count on women buying them, but not so the other way around.

Certainly not on the mpg front, but on the emissions front, most 1970 Hemi Cudas (or any Hemi or top dawg car from those days...429 Stangs, Shelby, Vette, Z-28, GTOetc.) are kept in amazing condition and run cleaner than a lot of the poorly maintained cars on the road today.
