4. "Closing Time"
I love them all, but "Closing Time' alays sound perfect at 3am w/ a beer in my hand and full of melancholy.

And the title track is the most beautiful, moving instrumental I've ever heard; never fails to choke me up and put a tear in my eye.

5. FRANK'S WILD YEARS: "You're Innocent When You Dream"
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 07:12 AM by nine23
I just saw Tom at The Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver. BC. He's on a current six city tour. (Yes, only six cities). The first "soft seat" theatre show sold out in minutes, so he agreed to add a second show at a 1000-seat 1930's ballroom.

Brilliant. This is an American icon-in-the-making folks. We know this. Enjoy him while we can.

7. I have a real sentimental attachment to Frank's Wild Years...
...I used to play it over and over while staying up all night doing assignments for my animation classes in college.

Now, I play the CD every once in a blue moon and think about those times with a touch of fond wistfulness.

9. So did I, Crankie...
Then you can imagine what it was like, at the Commodore show, when we held our pints high and sang along to "You're Innocent When You Dream".

Again: "Icon in the works". An American Classic.

14. "9th & Hennepin" from Raindogs (my pick)
Well it's Ninth and Hennepin
All the doughnuts have names that sound like prostitutes
And the moon's teeth marks are on the sky
Like a tarp thrown all over this
And the broken umbrellas like dead birds
And the steam comes out of the grill
Like the whole goddamn town's ready to blow...
And the bricks are all scarred with jailhouse tattoos
And everyone is behaving like dogs
And the horses are coming down Violin Road
And Dutch is dead on his feet
And all the rooms they smell like diesel
And you take on the dreams of the ones who have slept here
And I'm lost in the window, and I hide in the stairway
And I hang in the curtain, and I sleep in your hat...
And no one brings anything small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
"One for every year he's away", she said
Such a crumbling beauty, ah
There's nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix
She has that razor sadness that only gets worse
With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by
And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet
'til you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin
And you spill out over the side to anyone who will listen...
And I've seen it all, I've seen it all
Through the yellow windows of the evening train...

Found on a Russian Tom Waits site.

But the worst Tom Waits is better than the best of almost anybody else.

15. I'm pretty surprised that not a one has picked "Heartattack & vine" as
his/her favorite. In the interests of full disclosure, mine was Small Change (probably because it's the first collection of his work that I ever bought) but "Heartattack & vine" has its fair share of stand-out tracks--"Downtown", "On the nickel", "Ruby's arms" (one of his best songs), and the title track, obviously.

22. Best first line of a song EVER.
I spent all my money in a Mexican whorehouse, across the street from a Catholic church.
