Sixteen Seagulls Dead After Vehicle Massacre

VINELAND -- Sixteen seagulls are dead, victims of a vehicular massacre on the parking lot of Cumberland Mall.

Investigators, answering a call from a woman who described the incident, say a red car, possibly a full-size vehicle that may be a Pontiac, model year unknown, drove into a flock of gulls feeding on debris near the rear, or D, parking lot entrance.

According to Diane Starn, Vineland's animal control officer, 10 gulls were killed and six others injured.

The injured gulls had to be euthanized at the SPCA.

The gulls were feeding on what investigators say may have been tuna or chicken pieces deposited there, possibly to attract the birds.

"We have received calls in the past complaining about the gulls and have responded to reports of injured birds, but nothing like this," Starn said. "We haven't, to my knowledge, been contacted to ask for help in eliminating them."
