I imagine the thought of, say, arranging contributions to orphans must be less attractive to this fellow.

2. Cool...
... I knew an ex-Israeli army sniper hunter when I lived in Africa. Very interesting bunch of people, by all accounts.

6. US Army snipers tend to make...
...their own ghillie suits. I expect the more extreme ones probably load their own ammunition.

8. hubs & I gave $$ to a recalled employee of his--a sniper--because
the government issue body armor and ammo packs are total CRAP. These guys from the Reserves are getting screwed bigtime. This man was being sent to the Syrian border with really lame equipment and of course we helped out. Liberals are like that.

9. There might be another way to see this...
A sniper can pick out an armed fighter in a crowd of unarmed civilians and take down only the person who is a potential threat. Properly used in an urban warfare scenario, extremely accurate longer range fire reduces civilian casualties.

Also, the people who are helping are putting their money where their yellow ribbons and flag stickers are, actually doing something to directly support American troops. It isn't just money, either - already under-equipped police snipers are sending items out of their own kit. People tend to help those with whom they can relate, thinking "that could be me" or "that was me". It's a healthy part of human nature - we donate to the causes which touch us, and that isn't always the same cause. These donors have sympathy for someone in the world, and have been moved enough to go out of their way to act on that sympathy. Personally, I see more similarity between them and people who have been moved to act on their feelings for war orphans or whales or their local arts center than I do between them and a person whose contributions to their causes consist of bumper stickers and imprinted coffee mugs. Those kind of people exist for all causes as well.

Beyond that, the letters back from the snipers are indicative of the failure of the Rumsfeld doctrine and of the severe constraints under which American troops operate. The FAQ reveals just how bad the personnel shortage is. People who haven't been trained as snipers at all, but who are good shots, are being given a sniper's job but not the necessary equipment. If there's some political hay to be made from this sniper site, I would think that is it.

Finally, who knows that the people in this group don't also help orphans? Who knows that the Marine snipers involved don't also participate in Toys for Tots? Who knows that a person who has adopted a sniper hasn't also adopted a child? Why assume otherwise?
