Satellite radio ?s
We had a rental car last year that had satellite radio and my husband really loved it. I would like to get it for him for Christmas but know nothing about it other than there is a monthly subscription fee that will have to be paid. What do you have to have for your car?

2. I have XM
I absolutely love it. Couldn't live without it!
I have the Roady which I take everywhere I go. I listen to it in my car and in my office... and at home. It's the least expensive and most portable way to start out.

Sirius has it's good points like NBA and NFL games but XM has a lot more to offer.

Here's a great site that has lots of XM info.

3. You want...
...either a plug-and-play system (which gets the satellite signal, converts it to regular FM signal, and sends it to your car's radio) or a whole new car stereo. I'm actually getting one tonite, and I'll get a plug-and-play one. You can get the whole thing with installation for around $200.

You can choose to pay monthly subscription (12 bucks or so), anually (around a hundred), and I believe you can even pick a lifetime subscription for something like 500 bucks.

Check out www.sirius.com.

7. Yeah --
I generally avoid Radio Shack like the plague. Circuit City or Best Buy -- I actually think Best Buy will install it for you.

13. the sat radio story is too long to get ito here.
just a few points about it.#1 it is great- offering great programming and sound.#2 I went to an N.A.B. convention about ten years ago and listened to the pitch=trash free radio waves, local programming, and then charge the monthly rent if you want to call it rent.#3 it being a pay service like cable or sat t.v. gets it out from under the F.C.C. (which has been ripped apart for various reasons). The F.C.C. had these little rules like equal time for political views, local programming and the thought of radio and t.v. waves remaining free to us all.money was made thru advertising and those rules were strict untill Reagan.
All i can say is just have a radio too be it ever so humble. We are in a tuff place here the technology is great, the people who own it are not great. What happened with T.V. going from 5 stations to 300 is proof.Imagine if you owned a furniture store and wanted to advertise,or you were running for school board againt a neo nazi...... Sucks huh ? we have tons of info out there
but is c.n.n. info ? or Fox If you spend a ton of time in your car get a sat radio because it is superior sound.just toss a few bucks toward public radio even though now they have corporate sponsors. The neocons hate N.E.T. and N.P.R. it keeps the public informed, they hate that.

6. what you need
all the stuff comes in a kit.

You just need a receiver in your car, either a stereo component, or something you plug into your tape deck, and a magnetic antenna that's about two inches square and half an inch high you need to put on your roof (barely noticable).

I strongly recommend Sirius. They have the BBC, and more importantly, run Air America programming unedited.

XM only runs part of Air America and mixes it in with crap like Alan Colmes, paid punch bag of the right wing media.

Also, Howard Stern is moving to Sirius, so they are most likely to get the capital to expand other programming as well.

10. I also strongly recommend Sirius.
We get two progressive channels: #143 (Sirius Left - Hartmann, Schultz, Samuels, Young Turks, Colmes etc.), and #144 (Air America - Unfiltered, Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, Majority Report, Robert Kennedy Jr.). We get all of the shows, 24/7. XM does not provide that.

I've had it for a year - no problems. I have the basic $150 kit (home docking to a stero system, car docking, and the unit). I do want to add the FM modulator, so I don't have to allocate my tape deck for the Sirius unit (but this is an individual preference).

Sirius is offering a good deal now.

12. BBC
XM has the BBC and Bob Edwards for those who care.

I agree on the AAR thing but they do play Ed Schultz.

Stern's not coming for 2 years.

14. LESS THAN 4%, AND THEY'RE GETTING RID OF THAT.
My god, people need to get this idea out of their heads. CC has absolutely no control over XM.

15. Is 4% greater than 0%?
4% of a publicly traded company most definitely equates to "ownership"....

Sirius is a far better deal...
