Report from the center of the storm... |
|
Question: wasn't there supposed to be a hurricane or something to hit around Virginia Beach?
So far, this storm has fizzled a bit (which is good) and resembles a strong rainstorm. Took my dog for a walk this AM during the "height" of the blow, and actually had a liesurly stroll. Just have to maintain the catlike ninja reflexes and walk between tree projectiles.
Anyways, you know you live in the South when you see a person, in preparation of the "storm of the year", not boarding (or even taping) his windows, but lashing a tarp to his 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck. "Screw the house, we can fix that, but nobody (not even God) touches mah truck."
Just heard a report on the telly that 400,000 people in Virginia Beach are without power. So, basically, that's everybody except my house. Knock on wood.
Just had a flicker. I'm going to wrap this up lest we lose power. Take care everybody! And pray for me that I may live through this hellacious rainstorm! (chuckle)

I'm up in Fredericksburg, and people are FREAKING OUT about it. I've heard talk of nothing else today. I'm like, "It's RAIN and WIND, people. GET A GRIP ON YOURSELF. This is where people are coming to EVACUATE." Of course, they closed the schools and all the governemnt offices yesterday. What a joke.
People in Virginia love to flip out about the weather.

4. Another report from VA Beach |
|
So far, seeing the same conditions as you. I've seen much worse from Typhoons when I lived in Guam in the early 90's. I think we have a 50-50 chance of losing power, but obviously, we still have it. The powers that be always have had a tendency to scare the beejeesus out of every one so that they will take the necessary precautions. This time, it mostly has worked. Although I do see some idiots have put out their garbage cans for the usual Thursday pickup. Hope they have good insurance coverage, cause they'll need it. Stay safe, warm and dry neighbor.

5. What part of town do you live? |
|
I'm on Forest Glen off of Rosemont. I have some friends who have an apartment on Shore Drive staying with us.
I want to check out the ocean front. High tide is at 1:30 and they're saying the water is already 6 feet over normal. The boardwalk is at 9 feet.

anticipation of losing power. I live not too far from you. In Timberlake, between Princess Anne and South Independence, right off Windsor Oaks Blvd. Howdy neighbor!!!
P.S. By the way, did you lose power? So far, so good for me.

of part of the Virginia Beach pier being washed away. I used to walk down that thing when we were stationed at NAS Oceana...
People pulling up "souveniers" off the boardwalk, too. On the Weather Channel.

were just out in the surf before VAB Police forced them out. Normally, the beach is about 150 yards wide, and it is completely underwater. These 2 yokels were out there in the breakers swimming, forcing the police to respond, possibly tying up LEO assets.
Anyways, a tree fell down across the street from us, damaging absolutely nothing. Working up a good buzz as our hurricane party continues...24 hours and counting, baby!

I'd say it's a good 20 mph faster than an hour ago. I think it's gusting to about 65 mph on the oceanfront with sustained winds around 55 mph.

13. Yes, the wind has shifted |

from NNE to E. And it picked up quite a bit. Rain has tapered off a lot. Beer has begun flowing with amazing swiftness... More to come.
