How does one "burn" vinyl albums onto CD?
Is there a type of stereo component that does this? I am so out of touch with the world of electronics! I understand that i-Pod will do it, but I don't have a platform at this point to handle I-pod. I don't care too much about taking out skips and pops -- I sort of miss them. I am just wondering if such a component now exists.

Thanks!

1. as i understand it
you pretty much have to record the record onto something like a computer or a digital recorder and then burn a cd from there.

you might look into getting someone to do this for you, there are probably a few places locally who do it.

2. This is how I do it
I run the turntable through a pre-amp. You still can find turntables with a pre-amp already installed, but if your turntable doesn't have one, I bought mine from Circuit City for $30.

6. Patch it through to your CD burner

Plug the turntable into the pre-amp, then the pre-amp into the IN plugs on the CD burner.

3. Hook your stereo up to your sound card?
Could you hook your stereo up to your sound card on computer - save it to a file, then burn it to a cd?

4. Yes, there are stereo components. I've had one since '99..

It's hooked up to the auxillary jack of my receiver. I have burned plenty of vinyl records to CDs. If the record is clean, the CD will come out without detectible hisses. Plus, they're relatively cheap now. Of course, I bought mine just before the drastic price drop. :eyes:

7. You can find a component
That plugs into your amp the same way a tape deck does. They used to be pretty expensive, but they've come down in price, particularly if you buy an off-brand.

8. If you want to do it in a two-stage process,
by sampling it on your PC first, there are free programs that can help you record the sound. Goldwave is one such. After you've done that (I expect you'll end up with two samples, one for each side of the record) you can burn them to a CD using some software like Nero, which has a free trial version IIRC.

14. You've got to cut up the tracks first...
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 02:42 PM by Heyo
.... cut each song and save it as a seperate .wav

Otherwise your whole side of your record will be one long track.

15. That's true
You probably don't want one CD track per side of the LP.

Plug your turntable into this, and this into your computer. Then burn the cd from the computer.

Now, how about step by step instructions on how to:

Record your old records (OS 9, OS X, PC)
Record cassettes or mini disks (OS 9, OS X, PC)
Your voice and instrument (OS 9, OS X, PC)

16. If you can get it digitally remastered ...

Don't expect decent quality ripping a song from vinyl. If there is a CD available, you should just buy it. They will have gone back to the master discs (or tapes) and will have run the thing through filters to clarify the sound and get rid of any audio artifacts.

There ARE such tools that we can use to "clean" up an LP dubb. But it doesn't sound like you're experienced enough to wield them quite yet.
