Charles Barkley to run for governor in Alabama?
http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3133386

You have to scroll down to the middle of the page or so but Barkley said he will run for Governor of Alabama as a Democrat if John Kerry lost.

Here's an article from counterpunch.org that takes some quotes from Barkley's past.

http://www.counterpunch.org/zirin06052004.html

It would be an interesting race and I think it would help with the Democrats in the South. Barkley would be the highest profile governor in the South and could campaign with other Democrats across the region. I'm not saying that Barkley would be the one shot fix for the South, but I think it would help.

So... who wants to start a Draft Barkley movement?

1. I want him to stay right where he is. He's great on Inside the NBA
on game nights. I adore Sir Charles. (flame away)

I do think it would be great if he ran though, and wrote about it.

2. LOL, that's somewhat selfish
I enjoy him alot on Game Night too. He's hilarious and I love him. He could help us out in the South though. I would love watching Barkely press conferences and lectures, etc. C-SPAN would become Inside the NBA.

3. Yeah, but
He never put a time limit on it. He could run this coming election, or in 10 years.

And I don't know if Alabama is ready for a black governor with a white wife. There are entire counties he couldn't campaign in!

But he'd definitely bring out the black vote, and that could be enough.

10. I read that there are as many blacks as white register to vote in AL now

They don't all vote, but if Barkely was running, they probably would. Some white Democrats would vote for him and some people would vote for him just because he's cool.

And in regards to the time limit, let's start a Draft Charles movement.

13. Lot of confusion over a simple joke.

For a long time Barkley was rumored to be a Republican all because of a joke he once told.

"I asked my grandma if we were Republicans or Democrats. She said, 'Democrats, because Republicans only care about the rich.'

"'Well, hell,' I said, 'then we should be Republicans cause we're rich now!'"

He laughed off the "Barkley's a Republican" myth for years before finally getting steamed and announcing to the world that he was, is and will always be a Democrat several years ago. But, of course, the truth always takes forever to make the rounds.

15. No kidding! I never knew that.
When he came to town to play out the string on his playing career he was so happy because "Houston has the best titty bars in the country."

Remeber the midget he tossed through the plate glass window?

7. I remember Barkley kicking the shit out of Michael Savage in a debate.
Some time ago, like in 2001. It was on Talk Back Live on CNN. Barkley tore the Savage Weiner a new anus in a debate where Weeny Boy said that Liberals should all die, or something stupid.

14. Oh yeah, I forgot how your dad is so key to the AL Democrats
That would be great if you could give us some insider perspective. I read that Governor Riley is up for reelection in '06. It would be great if we could get Barkley in the mid-terms and campaigning for people in the South for '08.
