A group of gasoline-wielding robbers have spread fear through Mesa’s check-cashing businesses.
"To us, it was terrorism," said a manager at Checks Cashed, 1040 E. Main St., who was working Friday when a nervous, masked man set the store on fire. "This was attempted murder."
Police are frustrated in their attempts to catch the bandits, who have struck the businesses five times since Sept. 17. No one has been hurt, but police and workers worry the robbers’ "cruel" method of frightening people could become disastrous.
"What’s really disconcerting is that the latest robbery was in a strip mall," said Mesa police Sgt. Chuck Trapani. "They could have burned down not only that business, but the others nearby."
In all five incidents, three men wearing masks or bandannas sprayed gasoline from a canister inside the buildings. Sometimes the robbers sprayed it on clerks working behind bulletproof glass by sticking the canister’s nozzle through the small cash windows. The robbers tried to torch the last two businesses when they failed to get cash.
