Battle of the number one songs!!

I thought it might be time for another music "battle." I remember that on the radio they used to have an entire weekend of "battle of the songs." What they would do is play 2 songs and the audience had to phone in their favorite of the 2. The winning song went on to the next round.

Let's see if we can duplicate this game here at DU. I will post 2 songs that hit number 1 on the Billboard charts. I have their book here with all the songs and their highest positions on the charts. You will vote for your favorite song. The winning song will go on to the next round. I am only using number 1 songs.

The first battle:

"Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis vs "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.

If you want, you can give a reason why you voted for a particular song or why you chose not to vote for a particular song.

Let the battle begin!! :bounce:

8. Heartbreak Hotel for a number of reasons
not the least of which is when I hear HH on the radio I don't get a flashback of a very bad actor (Tom Cruise) doing a very bad rendition in a very bad movie (Top Gun).

Ack!

9. Heartbreak Hotel
For the version by John Cale (ex-Velvet Underground) live with Brian Eno, Kevin Ayers, and a bunch of other eccentric English rockers. (The record was called June 1, 1974. I'm not sure whether it's been reissued on CD.)

10. Righteous Bros.
Elvis was novel at first, and was groundbreaking in what he did. He then proceeded to turn into a caricature.

Gotta love the blue-eyed soul...

14. You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling
At my college the Frat pledges always had to sing this song to the girls' dorms. They sounded awful, but it makes giggle thinking about it to this day. :)
