Knowing weather history, why the heck would anyone live in Cape Hatteras? |
|
Is it me or does a hurricane hit Cape Hatteras every year or two, devastating everything? Why would you live there, knowing that you're gonna have to rebuild your house every two years? I'm sure it's a beautiful area, and I'm only being slightly facetious. And don't insurance companies get skittish if you try to insure a house on the coast there?
On a another note, I haven't noticed a hurricane get so much media coverage since hurricane Andrew; could the media be saturating us with 24 Hour Isabel Coverage to deflect attention from Cheney's troubles? I'm not saying Cheney CAUSED the hurricane, but there ARE other important stories out there not getting covered on TV or NPR because of Isabel, which doesn't even come close to the devastating power of Andrew or Camille or whoever. Is my tinfoil on too tight or what?
I don't mean to downplay the dangers of a hurricane; I've been in a few of 'em myself, and they are awesomely potent. And I'm sure there's gonna be flames for this post, but what the hell....
Negative or positive, what are your thoughts?

When the sharks ain't biting?
When you look back two years ago to the Chandra Levy/Gary Condit mess and compare that to the scandals of today (the deficit, 16 words, Niger connection, WMD's) how can anyone claim that there is a liberal bias in the media?

Have more money than sense, believe that money erects an invincible shield around them and/or prefer to remain ignorant.
As far as the coverage, I think that a lot of people are hoping the White House will be taken out, proceed to Camp David and flush Dimbo down the creek.

I last visited the Cape in 1964. I loved it then, and I could imagine loving it now that I'm older and more into stuff like sea breazes and quiet (the tourists go home sometimes)
Hell, why would anyone with a brain live in Northern Indiana? you got broiling heat and mosquitos as big as crows in the summer and blizzards and "snowed in" in the winter, and a fucked-up state legislature and Steve Buyer ALL year round....

and I think they like to up-play the damage from these things... I've seen a wrecked cottage here & there but for the most part this stuff stays put
you could ask the same question about why people live in California when there are earthquakes here...

why does anyone drive?
I get your point though - I think there may be too much concentration of development on the shorelines, but... Many more homes burn down than get destroyed in hurricanes, so why don't we all live in fireproof houses yet?
I mean, it's high quality to live at the beach. That's the bottom line.

NC is a gorgeous state; I would live at Hatteras in a minute, but am stuck in the city-
Why would anyone live in parts of California with all their natural disasters?

Between the year rounders and the rich out of state homeowners. A lot of the year-rounders families have lived on the islands for hundreds of years and they are a very hardy self sufficient bunch. Then you have the retirees and others that are building or buying the million dollar beach front houses. A friend of mine lives there and owns a construction company building those million dollar homes and he went to get a loan to buy his own place got approved for a $250,000 mortgage and it took him close to a year for a house to come on the market he could afford that was on the island.
My sister lived there a for a few years too and said that mainlanders make a big deal about hurricanes but some of the worst storms are the winter time nor'easters. They don't get cute names so they don't get the press coverage hurricanes do.
