Letter Arrives 54 Years Late
neither rain, nor sleet, nor.......

<snip>

A Norwegian woman got a real surprise this week when she received a letter mailed 54 years ago, delivered by a mailman who brought along flowers for the occasion, a Norwegian paper reported.

"It was really funny. It's fantastic to get a letter after so many years," Brita Loevaas told the Halden Arbeiderblad daily after opening the letter dated September 22, 1950.

The letter brought no 'news' of course: Brita Loevaas' parents-in-law inquired about the health of their grandson, who at the time was just two years old and is now nearing retirement.

"It puts the time that has passed into perspective," Loevaas reflected.

Also put into perspective is inflation: the postage stamp used at the time cost 0.25 Norwegian kroner, 22 times less than the cost of a stamp today.

3. A story about a lost letter
35 years ago I was working part time in the GPO for Houston, TX. There were many conveyor belts carrying baskets of mail over head. One night as I went about my duties I caught sight of the edge of an envelop on top of one of the conveyor supports. I found a ladder and retrieved the letter which was post marked about 5 years earlier. I took it to the floor superintendent who told me to put it in the system. I said it was so old, he said, we have no choice but to deliver the mail.

If you ever spent any time in one of the great mail centers the immense volume of mail would astound you. It is no wonder that a few rare pieces get lost and then found.

4. Our post office is f*cking great!
Having spent an extended amount of time in Europe, I can easily say that our Post Office is probably the best in the world. It's cheaper, easier, faster, EVERYTHING. I know I'm a geek but whenever I go in to buy stamps I always tell the counter clerk what a great deal it is because I know they get lots of crap.
