Teenage Birthday Problems.
My daughter, who turns 14 tomorrow, came home yesterday from school and was absolutely furious that she was "only" going to be 14 when all her friends and classmates have turned 16 this year. She said" it is not fair that Pam and Megan and Alicia can all drive and go wherever they want without having their dad or mom around them. They all laugh at me and say I am a loser.I hate my life!".I told her that when she gets to be as old as me she would wish that people just forget your bithdays so you can pretend that you are the same age for a few years and even get younger.

Her response: "dad, are people also supposed to get dumber as they get older?"

Youth sure is wasted on the young.

1. I'm pretty sure that Exodus says you can sell her into slavery
I think 14 is not to old for that.

2. Having been the youngest in my class
too, just tell her she is so much smarter than her classmates and that with all her wisdom, she will figure out how to get rides.

3. Oh what are those words echoing in my ears from childhood?
My parents saying "Life isn't fair. Get used to it." every time I started complaining about how something wasn't fair...

Smile at her and tell her that these are the best years of her life. This is as good as it gets and it's all downhill from here.

(Yes, I would make a bad parent and I know it.)

DO NOT tell her "these are the best years of your life"!

They're not, but she's still better off than many people, so let her either come up with a plan to do something about it, or stop complaining.

4. You could threaten to hold her back a grade or two...
...so that she'd be the oldest among her new crop of friends.

5. Your last line is so true
I spent the first 18 years of my life in a concentrated rush to reach 18 (which was the drinking age at the time).

I've spent the remaining 25 trying to get back there. Or younger.

It seems like a cruel joke that we only begin to appreciate our youth when it's gone.

I can say from experience that this is only one of a long series of "It's not fair" conversations that you face. Enjoy! :hi:

9. Hey, we're liberals. We're TRYING to make the world more fair!
But there's some things you can change, some things you can bend, and some things you just can't change. In this kid's situation, nothing will change her being too young to drive except time.

10. Nothing is fair at 14
Or at 16, for that matter.

She's right though, people do get dumber as they get older. ;-)

11. Tell her that, in Brazil, you don't drive until 18
But then again, you CAN drink at 18. Make of that what you will.
