Question of DUers who have lost their pets
how did you dispose of the "remains"?

I've often wondered about that.

2. For myself
I've buried them on my property in the past but having moved, that seems not to have worked well though I still have free access to that place.

My last two, my beloved Boxers, I had privately cremated and they are on my desk beside me in lovely pottery urns engraved with their names, with their collars draped over the top and framed photographs of them in front.

I think I may eventually scatter them back in Vermont on one of the woods trails that they loved so much. Or I may just keep them in the urns and have them buried with me.

5. We bury them in our backyard
2 of our family dogs who died of old age are buried back there. 2 birds and a gerbil.

My uncle is a vet and has a freezer that he keeps animals in until they get cremated and he would take them if we wanted him to but the kids seem to handle it better knowing they are buried in the back yard with a little rock over where they were buried that they painted the animals names on.

Interesting question,
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 03:02 PM by Throckmorton
as I just posted in the meeting room that I put Matty, the Wonder Cats, ashes in my late wifes casket at her funeral.

"Oh, did I mention April was buried with the ashes of Matty, the Wonder Cat? Who died last year of cancer, on the very day April was diagnosed with cancer. We were going to bury her ashes under a tree in the yard, but I decided to hold off on that. So now the best wife that ever lived, rests with the best cat that ever lived, for all eternity."

I hope this doesn't freek anybody out too much.

The cat before that 'China Blue Eyes' had her ashes buried under a rose bush, a Mr. Lincoln as I recall.

15. I don't think that's weird at all
My partner wants to be cremated, and to have his ashes scattered with those of our cats.

In our case, all of our dogs have been indoor dogs, and I couldn't stand the thought of leaving them out in the cold, dark, lonely world.

Crap. I have to go to the lady's room. I seem to have something in my eye.

18. PRACTICAL NOTE
You do NOT have to purchase an urn through the crematory. They will provide you with a temporary container at your request (in our case, they were made of aluminum). You will find a much larger selection and a better price by doing your own research. Do not be pushed into making a selection at this point. We searched for the better part of a year before finding the right choice for our first baby, and haven't found the right choice yet for our second.

I am sorry for your loss, and I hope that soon you will find joy and comfort in the memory of your lost baby.

Hi, arcane1, hope you are doing okay... thinking of you...

as to my answer to the question... my dear departed fur babies are buried under a bush outside the apartment I used to live in (where they passed on). The bush is under the tree where the bird feeder hung... they spent many happy hours watching the birds.

30. That's the way we're going
We own the house and have no intention of moving. We're planning on burying them in the woods and getting a St Francis statue and a bench so we can visit if we want.

Our oldest are 9 so hopefully it'll be a while.

8. We buried her in our yard, and planted a plant
Jezebel was killed outside of our home, so we buried her in the backyard and put in a big jasmine plant. Poor kitty.

I don't know if we'd do the same thing if we had to euthanize an animal at our vet.

10. We've cremated ours
We've had two dogs die, one hit by a car and one in his sleep two years later. Both were cremated.

When we die, it is my wish to be cremated and scattered off a sea cliff near where I grew up in Oregon. I would like the ashes of my dogs to be scattered with me. No marker, and no funeral.

11. Ours cats who passed away this year,
the last one who left us on Monday, were put to sleep at the Vet's office. The vet took care of the disposal for us, as we live in an apartment. If we had a home with a yard, we would have buried them.

16. Cremation.
They will put the ashes in a plastic box and you can bury them or whatever you choose to do. Since we have been planning a move to the farm for a long while I have 3 or 4 of those plastic boxes just waiting for our move to have a final resting place. Don't exactly know what I am going to do when one of my horses dies, I suppose rent a backhoe.

then you can keep their ashes in a little box and take them with you when you move. They are always with you.

My pet's ashes will be mixed with my own ashes(hopefully not too soon) and we will all be sprinkled in the Montana mountains

23. My precious little red doxie, Ruby (as in Rubyduby)
is buried in my parents backyard next to our black and tan doxie, Meechie, that was a little older than her. I'm sure my little boy doxie, Rusty, will join them there someday.

It's a special spot in the backyard that gets lots of warm sunshine and has daffodils growing all around.

24. My beautiful Kempy
the best labrador that ever lived, died at an old age and is buried at a sheep farm where I used to work.
She loved the farm better than home. She used to lovingly fuss over newborn lambs. With weak sickly lambs,Kempy would lick the will to live, right into them. She loved her work. During lambing season, Kempy would be reluctant to get in the car and leave after our days work at the farm was done. She would hide and ignore me when I called.

She is where she liked best, and that pleases me.

26. these threads always make me cry.
MY Thumbelina's ashes are in a box that I've kept with me for the last 13 years (she was my kitty kat. Hit by a car when she was 6 years old.) Never knew what to do with her ashes. I like the idea of burying or scattering them with me one day. I will have other babies to scatter with me by that time. Now I'm starting to cry....sheesh, I'm a mush.

My Toadsies and Bigfatsmalltoad (they were toads) are buried at our old house. Now I wish I had them cremated too, since they're there and we're here. I feel like I abandoned them.

27. We flushed 'Swimmy' this morning

Cat knocked over the both the hamster maze and the fish bowl next to it yesterday. We're not sure how long he was out of water before someone got home and got him back into water. He was alive then, but didn't survive until this morning.

We had an impromptu service and name change - from 'Swimmy' to 'Swirly'. :spank:

28. Cremation
We cremated our last cat, Reuben, when he died last year. It was nice 'cause I got to go into the crematorium right before they put him in and have a last good-bye. Also that way I knew it was his ashes I was getting back.

My first cat, Bo, was buried in a friends pet cemetery back in 1988.

29. We had Taylor cremated and put her urn in a chest of her things
Her leash, her dish, her tags, her favorite toys, pictures, her collars...everything. I keep it in my bedroom. My best friend ever.

My mom had her dog cremated when she died, but she buried the ashes in the back yard and we placed a marker over it. I guess it's different for everyone.

32. Cremation
My kitty is in a box on my shelf, looking over me. Creepy? Sure. But I just haven't decided what to do with him and given that he liked to annoy me in my office while I worked on the computer, I figured this was the best location for him until I figured it all out.

The cremation, funeral, urn and pick up charge was around $125.00 which wasn't that much.
