Two healthy things I learned on Oprah
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 03:13 PM by Ratty
Since I've been coming home from work early I've gotten hooked on Oprah. A little while ago she had a doctor on that took people from the audience and figured out what their real age was compared to their chronological age. One 40-something woman was really in her 60's! Then he started talking about healthy things people could do to reduce their real ages.

1. Salmon is supposed to be best for reducing your cholesterol. But you need to eat 4 servings a week! Geez! So he said that canned wild salmon (it has to be wild) was every bit as good as fresh. So I got myself a whole bunch of cans of no-salt-added wild salmon and instead of my favorite tuna sandwiches I make salmon sandwiches! Yummy!

2. Broccoli is great for you. But if you don't like it or don't have the time to fix it broccoli sprouts are just as good, maybe even better! I love broccoli but I don't always feel like fixing it or don't want to eat it everyday so now I put lots of broccoli sprouts on every salad I make. I'd never even heard of broccoli sprouts before but there they were in my produce store when I looked for them.

Ain't Oprah grand?

1. I thinks she's great.
She's positive (except for her DEPRESSING book club choices) and she's actually using her show to get people to change their lives for the better, as opposed to the strict voyeurism on most of the other talk shows and reality shows.

I get her magazine sometimes too.

I like her.

8. I never realized
Until I started watching her. You're right--she's very positive. I have to admit lately I've sort of defected over to Ellen, but I manage to switch back to Oprah pretty often.

2. One mentally healthy thing I learned on Oprah....
....is that Dr. Phil is egotistical blowhard that Oprah should apologize for unleashing on the unsuspecting world.

:)

3. My mom used to make salmon loaf and
salmon patties (little salmon loafs) about the size of burgers. They weren't bad. I'll have to try that some time, as its been about 30 years since i've had that. Mix it right and it might just make a good salmon burger with the right ingredients.

I like brocolli too, but what are brocolli sprouts?

6. They look just like alfalfa sprouts
And man do I hate alfalfa sprouts! Look for the alfalfa sprouts or bean sprouts in your produce store. If they have broccoli sprouts they'll be there too.

What I like about these two tips is that they fit right into my lifestyle. I already ate tuna sandwiches a lot, so switching to salmon sandwiches was a no fuss, no muss, free and easy solution. And I ate a lot of salad, but didn't manage to eat broccoli very often, so sprinking some broccoli sprouts on top was free too.

That doctor had a lot of other tips too but I mostly knew about them, or they were too inconvenient to slide right into my life.

5. Park Seed company sells a wonderful sprouter thingy for a couple
of bucks and you can order seeds from some dang place. PM me if you want to know where I got mine. Just had some for lunch.

7. Great idea!
I bought some broccoli seeds at the store, intending to sprout my own since the store-bought ones don't last very long. But a "sprouter-thingy" sounds like just the ticket! I'll check out Park Seed Co.
