Overheard: "( Blank ) created the look of MTV" |
|
How many people want to take credit for MTV's overcut style? The list grows by the day still. At least twice I have overheard people bragging about some relative or acquaintance and their alleged claim to almost-fame? "Inventing the look of MTV" !
PBS is the latest to make the claim. While watching their series on Broadway musicals, they stated that Jerrome Robbins had created a style that eventually culminated in MTV.
When someone mentions MTV I usually think of a couple of things. First, the irony of that name since they almost never play music vids anymore. And two, who in their right mind would want to take credit for for the horribly over-cut, style over substance, looks over talent, and salad bowl editing that is MTV?
Anyone else heard a claim on MTV's spawning?

First 'VJ' I ever saw. Still remember the jingle.
(I think it was actually Rick Moranis, IIRC).

claim as a pre-MTV ground breaker is Richard Lester who shot most of Hard Days Night (1964) in a veritae style and used a lot of jump cuts. His style was widely emulated, mostly by The Monkees.
