ok then, list your top 10 favorite concerts
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 05:41 PM by tigereye
I don't usually copy-cat and I already listed a few there, but the fave gig thread inspired me to think about all the great shows I have seen.

1. Queen Ida - zydeco dance til you drop. Much better than Buckwheat Zydeco, sorry.

2. X! Billy Zoom, grinning and blasting while John and Exene struggle to hear themselves. IT WAS REALLY LOUD!

3. Youssou N'Dour. Great Dancing, playing, singing. Spiritual and fun, in a way.

4. Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens. Wow. Amazing harmonies.

5. REM. Small gig and arena gig. The small gig was very intimate with lots of great covers, but their first arena tour ( Green era, I think) was too. Throwing Muses opened. IN AN ARENA, no less.

6. Per Ubu. David Thomas. Nuff said.

7. The Clash. Sandinista era. Scary militaristic bouncers in the aisles, no dancing, to give that feeling of fascist realism.

8. Patti Smith. Rock and more rock. Seeing the goddess of punk for the first time. All her classics. She was spitting and talking about her late husband golfing at a local golf course.

9. Peter Gabriel. WOMAD. with Sinead. Jah Wobble. Incredible.

10. The Replacements. Boy they were really drunk. We were not impressed. People said, what is the big deal. Little did we know.

I could go on, but....:)

30. Ahh... You need Garcia Wisdom right about now...

Jerry Garcia once said: "The one thing that irritates me about Deadheads is their indiscriminate musical taste"...

He was such a wise man... A genius, really... So much more than the junkie the media loves to make him out to be... Oh yeah, that reminds me of one more reason I hate the media...

Wow, you really got your fill!!

I've got a couple dozen under my belt, but I didn't really get into them until the late eighties.

25. I'm actually a baby in the Dead community...

I know people who have seen THOUSANDS of shows... I still had to work throughout all of this. Many people just followed them around for YEARS, it was more of a community than going to see a show... God, I miss those days so... I've become my mother... Sigh...

3. I've only been to two really cools ones..
The first one was Aerosmith, for their greatest hits tour did it kick ass!! Expect for the part when my friend puked on my and we had to go to the bathrooms and then ended up in the nosebleed part, because we couldn't go back to where were.... yeah.

The second one was 3 Doors Down at this fair. Didn't end up too well either, these drunk ass kids were moshing into me and for a long time then my big brother shoved the punk and the kid was throw into the crowd and came flying back at my brother and got a sucker punch in and gave my brother a bloody nose and we had to leave to take care of his nose, luckly my brother got a hit in before we left  Dumbass little shit got kicked out too HAHAH!

sounds pretty good. When Elvis C played here, he played in a basketball hall where you have to sit on bleachers. Friends who went were uncomfortable, but he was apparently great. I hope to see him next time he is here.

before two of us in our band got pregnant and had to "retire" from our post-punk musical careers.

I am not sure how long Tool has been around. Are they considered speed metal?

the college radio guys liked one of our songs from our first vinyl album, which was why we were asked to play. But then my stupid bandmates refused to play it. Made no sense. Still makes me mad. ( but we were "artists" or some such shit.)

Yeah, Tool were the headliners. We played in the afternoon, before people were drunk. :)

If my list had gone on for 20, he would have been on it. I saw him at a small club and he went out in the street in the snow and played by remote. It was sooo cool. He was excellent and is sorely missed. :(

No one gave more than he did, and he was a really cool guy too. I met him once, and he even let me play with his guitar (which I couldn't because he uses an odd tuning, and there was NO WAY I was going to re-tune his guitar)

16. I can't rank them - too much decision making.
But here are ten that stood out:

Steel Pole Bath Tub - they played my hometown on my 21st birthday, which totally fucking rocked, since at the time they were my favoritest band.

The Pixies, in '89-'90-ish, when they were just about to break out. Opening act: The Happy Mondays. DAMN, what a show that was.

Skinny Puppy, VIVIsectVI tour. Great sound, incredible visuals.

Butthole Surfers. Locust Abortion Technician or Hairway to Steven tour, I forget. Sounded great, utterly sickening visuals.

Hum, with Mercury Rev opening. OK nobody knows Hum, really, but they ruled and continue to rule my world. May they reunite one of these days.

Fugazi, first tour. Ho. Lee. Shit.

Naked Raygun at the Studio-A-Rama festival in Cleveland. They were Naked Raygun, so naturally this show was flawless and completely out-of-control.

Sonic Youth, Sister tour. When they were in their prime, they were well nigh impossible to fuck with.

Gang of Four, that reunion tour they did in '95-ish. I'd missed out on them the first time around, since I was like 8, so I figured I'd catch the reunion tour for shits and giggles. They surprised the hell out of everyone present by being utterly electrifying.

Oneida, last August. Totally amazing band, I hope they get bigger.

Needless to say, I wasn't 8. ;) Never saw the Pixies.. not sure how I missed them. We once played a gig with the Afghan Wigs, next door to a hardcore kids underage Fugazi gig in another room. Yes, that was strange. They were impressive and very nice. I think I met Ian McKAye that night. Assuming it was him, he was very sweet.

Naked Raygun. Cool. Cool list in general.

Crap I forgot to list all the Scrawl shows I saw. I loved Scrawl.

so maybe I didn't meet Ian McKaye, maybe it was someone else. That was a very long night. We had to drive back to Pgh from WVA in a blizzard of sorts.

19. Hm.
10) Fireshock benefit concert, Chicago, 1997 -- Only because my band played there. God, the Empty Bottle is a death trap. They've got cheap booze, though.

9) Sonic Youth, Cincinnati, 1992 -- I never much liked Bogarts, but there were three good things about it. This show and the Milkmen show below were two of them.

8) Pixies, Milwaukee, 2004 -- Their performance was probably better four days later in Chicago. But the Aragon's acoustics suck, and you couldn't hear the drums.

7) Dead Milkmen, Cincinnati, 1993 -- I got my eye stepped on by a jackboot. Blood everywhere. 1 1/2 inch gash on my eyelid. Thought I was gonna lose the sumbitch.

6) Reigning Sound, Cleveland, 2001 -- Greg Oblivian's new (at the time) band, playing Memphis rock & roll for cats with broken hearts. I was one of those at the time. I think. I was too drunk to remember.

5) Makers/Thee Headcoats, Green Bay, 1997 -- The Makers always put on a great show, and I stole Billy Childish's lyrics after Thee Headcoats' set.

4) Bassholes, Cleveland, 2002 -- Don Howland often puts on crap shows. Depends on if he wants to be there, which he usually doesn't. This time, he did.

3) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Chicago, 2002 -- Fuckin' sick how good this show was. Cave at the Chicago Theatre, like a black mass in a gothic cathedral. This was the only time in my life I've ever wanted to fuck a man.

2) Laika and the Cosmonauts, Cincinnati, 1996 -- I got my wisdom teeth pulled earlier that day. I was on painkillers, and had a mouth full of cotton and empty sockets. I smoked and drank like a prisoner on furlough. I think there was a band, too.

1) Cowslingers, Cleveland, 1995 -- I drank three 22 oz. Colt .45s and a flask of rum. I puked and passed out during the opening act. I hear the 'slingers put on a good show. The next day I nursed my hangover with McDonalds' fried chicken, which they were test-marketing in Cleveland at the time. It was one of the most horrible weekends of my life.

hmmm. Some of your list is food for thought. Some of these bands are not known to me. The Bassholes I have heard of. I think in those years I was busy playing mommy and was unaware of much except crying, feeding, trying to sleep and wondering why I had decided to breed and work as well.

So you never actually saw Karl Hendrix? I never did either ( not sure how I managed that), so I shouldn't talk. And I live in Pittsburgh.

35. lemme see now
Pink Floyd, sadly it ws the first tour without Roger Waters but still a great show.

Meatloaf, This was about a month after his first album came out and Jim Steinman was with him and it was great.

Yes with Donovan as opening act, probably about 1977 or so.

Alice Cooper, Welcome to My Nightmare tour.

Steve Morse and Rod Morgenstein and some other guy, but basically half of the Dixie Dregs.

Kansas when they toured with Louisian Larue whose christian members converted some of Kansas' members and that was the end Kansas.

Harry Chapin, about 1975 or so. I still mourn his untimely passing.

Jethro Tull, saw them several times but the best was when they opened with a 25 minute or so version of Thick as a Brick.

Rod Stewart, just as Do You Think I'm Sexy was hitting so he was still doing mostly his earlier stuff.

Styx in 77 or so. Best sound system I have ever heard in my life. Absolutely perfect mix.

Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 06:44 PM by notmypresident
Because I never was really a fan was Kiss, oh about 74 or 75.

There were two things significant about that show. First, a bluegrass band opened the show. They were called Mountain Smoke. They were booed off the stage. One of their members was Vince Gill.

And second, one of country musics gods was also at that show in the audience. Garth Brooks.

Otherwise I really don't like Kiss and now that I hear Gene Simmons supports Bush I REALLY don't like Kiss.

50. I sat backstage during an Ace Frehley show once. Got to meet him....
... same at a Vinnie Vincent show. My high-school sweetheart's father used to sound mix for Kiss. Interesting.

47. Haven't seen 10 concerts I don't think.
My favorites were in no order:

Kiss and Cheap Trick back in '77 as it was my first big show. Got no regrets.

Aerosmith with The Cult opening at the festhalle in Frankfurt. Front row center.

10,000 maniacs at the Batschkapp(sp?) a smallish club in Frankfurt. Beer and Brotchen. Natalie Merchant commented that she felt like Bob Hope playing to so many G.I's.

Van Halen was good back in '81.

Pat Travers opened once for Rush and once for B.O.C. I liked him more than those bands. They were good though.

48. Mine
Grateful Dead
Laurie Anderson
Iggy Pop - he was injured and in the middle of the show had a roadie come out and duct tape his arm to his chest - the show was great
Allman Brothers - wasn't really a fan but truly enjoyed the show
Primus/Fishbone - very small venue, quite fun
Adrian Belew
Psychedelic Furs
INXS with opening act Public Image Ltd

The absolute worst show - The Flaming Lips (feel free to flame, but that singer sucks!)

72. I saw Flaming Lips in '92
opening for Throwing Muses. I'd have to say I was not particularly impressed.

It was kind of depressing. I remember the turnout was extremely low. The Lips had this loud-ass PA, multiple vocal effects, smoke machine, lights and they played for me and about half a dozen other disinterested losers. I felt kinda sorry for them, actually.

all five shows they played in Chicago. Of course, I couldn't hear too much, what with all the screaming. But they looked great!

Edit: The Rolling Stones were great too, before the Arie Crown theater burned down. Back before they were really, really famous. With Brian Jones. Joni Mitchell, The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Emmylou Harris, The Bee Gees (pre disco), Tony Bennett, Chicago.

At Shea stadium when I was 15. 1966. I remember that I wore a black flowered pants suit with an orange "poor boy" top and some sort of suede shoes and oh god, shoot me now, I am older than dirt.

54. My list
In no real order except the ones I liked most are closer to the top

1. Led Zeppelin, right after Physical Graffiti came out. We drove from Portland to vancouver to see them. The sound was in quad...Awesome they were!

2. Fleetwood Mac...this was the Bob Welch version of the band and we saw them in the gymnasium of Mt. Hood Community College right when "Heroes Are Hard to Find" came out. Opening act was triumvirate, a German (?) version of ELP?

3. REM...at the Starry Night in Portland when "Reckoning" came out. The Dream Syndicate opened. This was a great high energy drunken orgy of a show! They were my favorite band for several years after that.

4. Wire, at the Pine Street Theatre in about 1986 right after they reformed and "The Ideal Copy" came out. They were magnificent! I saw them again about a year and a half ago and it just wasn't the same. 17 years can really age some people!

5. The Fall, in 1988 or so and then again in 1996, both times at Pine Street/LaLuna, and both times with Brix! This was around the periods when they were the best rock band in the world.

6. David Bowie at Portland Memorial Coliseum 1976.. The Thin White Duke "Station to Station" tour. The guitarist, Earl Slick, quit the band just as the tour began so they got Iggy pop's guitar player to fill in. As a result the band rocked! If you've ever heard the bootleg lp "The Thin White Duke" recorded at Nassau Coliseum in NJ in 1976, that is pretty the same set. Great show!

7.Butthole Surfers, twice in the late 80s at pine Street, once when "Locust Abortion Technician" came out, then again when "Hairway to Steven" came out. This was when they had the brother and sister 2 drummers lineup Just...unlike anything I had seen previous! 2 films playing at once, A guy singing through a megaphone, smoke bombs going off, a go-go dancer onstage wearing nothing but a huge strap-on dildo (1st time...2nd time-nothing)! Plus the most insane sounding music! The opening bands were great, too...Band of Susans, the Hellcows, Smegma...

8.Eric Clapton, with Santana, in Mobile Alabamba, 70s some time...I had no idea what this show was going to be like until the came out on stage and the song they started with was "Layla"...Basically his band was Derek and the Dominos minus Duane Allman and plus Yvonne Elliman (yes she did get to sing "I Don't Know How to Love Him"...Other highlights include great versions of "Badge" and "Sunshine of your Love", plus a jam at the end when Carlos Santana came out and jammed with Eric.(that was interesting!)This show pretty much blew me away! He recorded some of the slower songs from this tour and put them on that album "EC was here"...

9. Gong at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, late 90s sometime. the reunion tour, complete with the same people who made up the band during the "Trilogy" era minus Steve Hillage, but the guitarist they had was excellent, so no big deal there...yes Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth were there and this was like ecstacy! not that mant people there, though, which was ok because you got get up real close! The floating dance floor forced you to move, too, so you could not stand still at all even if you wanted to! This was one band I thought I'd ever get to see...

10. Tie (hehe) Television at the Earth Tavern, late 70s...first punk show I ever went to, opening were local band the NeoBoys (all women) and
the Wipers, La Luna, late 80s. The Wipers originally played quite a bit in Portland and I saw them a few times (at the time I lived 15 miles away from town in the burbs....you know, living at home!)Then they moved to New york. then they moved back but played live rarely. Then they (well Greg Sage at least) moved to Arizona so that was that. But they did play live in town right when "Land of the Lost" came out (That was a really good album, ever try to find it on cd?) and they were classic, they played for eons, they must have done all their songs, ending with their first one, "Better Off Dead"...

I could go on, i'm thinking of more good bands I've left out, but I should probably leave room for the next person! :)

60. Zappa, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Sabbath, Rush
All excellent shows - (except for the Genesis "We can't dance" tour, which was utter shit - they played well, of course; they're brilliant musicians; but their music by then was so awful, it was unlistenable)

Saw those bands multiple times - cept Zappa, only saw him once, in '84. But it was fucking awesome! And still a highlight of my musical concert career. Zappa and Floyd in '94 are the top two shows. And after that, perhaps Rush in '97, when they did all of 2112. And they did it really, really fucking loud. And, of course, with perfection.

Paul McCartney's New World Tour (1990)

Paul McCartney's Driving Rain Tour (2002)

REM (kicked ass!!!)Monster Tour (1995?)

Rush (saw them multiple times in the late 1980s, early 1990s)

Robert Plant (1987 or 1988)

Bob Dylan - 1989 (won free tix)

"1964 as the Beatles" / "1964: The Tribute" (been to so many of their shows since 1987, I lost count...they are the best Beatles tribute band (Rolling Stone rated them "The #1 Beatles Tribute band in the world).

OK, I'll admit it, I saw The Monkees (1996)

Richie Havens (played at a summer festival in the mid-1990s in Hampton, VA...was really awesome)

70. Fun thread...
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 05:45 PM by darkstar
some jaw dropping tales above, some things in common w/ my experiences, and some verification of things I long heard but never experienced.

In no order...

Dead Shows: In the collective, here. Not the biggest traveling head but saw them from 73 in St. Louis to 95 about 40 times I suppose. Can't single one or even a handful out. But if you dig 'em you dig 'em and there was only one fix...

Patti Smith at the Fillmore: 2000, I think. Would have been one of my most memorable shows even w/ out the Garcia tribute. Lengthy 2 verse Dark Star into Not Fade Away (hope I got that order right). People were weeping. Fucking A. (The other two times I saw Patti Smith deserve honorable mention; Wave tour (79?) in Kansas City and New Orleans this past summer. She is the realest deal still going, IMHO.)

Neil Young: Harvest tour, but not an accoustic the whole nite. Swerving into the loose drunken sound of Time Fades Away, Tonight's the Night, etc. Incredible.

Los Lobos: Seen them twice in small venues, approx 96 and 2000. My face literally hurt the next day both times from laughing and smiling at how good it they are. The singing. Wow. Hildalgo can sing like Winwood in his prime, IMO. In 2000, esp, the sick Beefheart-like rhythms and shit they throw down just leave me shaking my head. The musicianship is just sick. Like the dead, however, the studio records just don't caputure the vibe.

Todd Rundgren's Utopia: Circa 75, "Another Live" tour. Prog Rock w/ Beatle-esque and Brian Wilson pop-craft (and Todd solo career songs) thrown in. Outer space to pop balladry to heavy-fricking metal.

The Guess Who: 3-4 shows in St. Louis from about 73-75. As weird as it may sound, the range of stuff they did was pretty cool. Listen to their live 72 album for an idea of the sneering, lizard king channeling that was already going on, the re-envisioning of songs, the Dead-like quality of the revamped "New Mother Nature" and "Running Back to Saskatoon." By the time I was seeing them, the jams had gotten loger, the swagger even broader. But the real reason for their inclusion here is I have yet to meet anyone who ever saw them who does notagree that Burton Cummings had the most incredibly powerful voice they have ever heard live.

77. And oh yeah, Replacements in Kansas City
circa the album w/ "Aching To Be," whatever the hell year that was.

"New Sobriety Tour" I think they called it. I'd seen 'emm before. all drunk, playing 45 min sets, launching into "Born to Run" or "Paranoid" for 30 secs and just didn't get the hype.

But by the time of this tour, man, what an act. I don't think I've ever seen a band wear down an audience to that extent. The more Westerberg shredded his voice, the better they sounded. Came to what years of concert goiong led me to believe was the climax and then they STARTED TAKING REQUESTS. For about 30-40 minutes. I swear to God, I have never seen an audience leave looking so exhausted.

The reason I didn't put it on my list was because there was a drunk, obnoxious bastard who kept screaming behind me during the entire show. It was a beautiful fall evening with a gorgeous Hunter's moon and was completely ruined by a drunk 'fan.'

76. So hard to pick...
Grateful Dead in Atlanta at the Fox, small venue with great acoustics and they played so well...and the Sanger in New Orleans too...with an acoustic set...AWESOME! I rode 20 hours without a ticket and we ended up on the third row!

Rolling Stones in Clemson, SC with Living Colour opening.

REM in Page Auditorium at Duke with Db's opening, I was backstage because my husband knew the Db's. Reckoning had just come out, I think...

Stevie Ray Vaughan at Page at a private party...kicked ASS!

Pretenders in Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh, NC. Another fairly small venue.

Dog Day Concert in Atlanta in the 70's with Mother's Finest, Heart, The Cars, Aerosmith, Bob Marley, Foreginer, Cheap Trick....I'm adding 2 different years together here....oh well

Garbage at Cat's Cradle when their first album was just beginning to break big. I got to interview Butch Vig on the phone before the gig and then meet all of the band after the show. I loved
Shriley Manson...she was so cool!

Mr. Bungle at Cat's Cradle was one of the best shows I've ever seen. They rocked!

Less Than Jake in Wilmington, NC. They were great and my teenage daughter and her friends got to interview Chris after the show. He was so cool! And the band gave me a signed poster with "World's Coolest Mom" on it!

Marcy Playground at the Cat's Cradle when Sex and Candy was big. I interviewed John before the show. He was a really sweet guy and I loved most of that album. I hope he is still out there writing because I liked the 2nd album too, but I haven't seen them do anything else and he is way too talented to give it up!

I've seen many more great shows that I'm forgetting at the moment. This is what occurs to mne first.

Makes me miss going out.

Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 09:58 PM by tigereye
after not seeing her ever before.

The show I mentioned was probably in 2000 or 2001 with a full band. I saw all my old punk cronies at the show.

Another the year after 9-11, an acoustic show with lots of art and media and lovely tributes to her mom who had just died.

Most recently she was at our 2004 summer arts festival, very family friendly show. Lots of songs from the new album, Trampin. And she is slated to play a benefit here in two weeks as well.

Mr. Bungle - saw them in smallish clubs during both "Disco Volante" & "California" tours ("California" show was f**king KILLER!!!!) Also seen Faith No More & Tomahawk shows - I'm a total Mike Patton sycophant as you may have (but most likely haven't) gathered by my Username.

Geoge Carlin - HUUUGE Carlin fan, I am!! Finally got to see him live in 2001.

Zen Frisbee circa '94-95.

81. Really,really hard to pick just ten
I'll try,and these are in no realorder at all.

Ed Hall (saw them 7 times) In Groton,CT.Hanging with the band before the show the bass player was looking at the crowd and commented to me,"Just a bunch of tucked in shirt wearing motherfuckers!" They played a long set even though the only people who were on the floor was myself and my two friends. Then played basketball after the show with them and fucked up my ankle. My friend puked out the passenger side window on the way home which came right back in and landed on my other friend in the back seat.Ahhhh, what a night :)

Alice Donut (saw them 6 times) In Boston,MA.These guys were always a great live act.

Helmet/Sepultura/Ministry in Fitchburg,Ma.All three bands were at thier peak (Helmet was touring for Meantime,Sepultura for Arise and Ministry for Psalm 69).

The Cows in Boston,Ma. Proof that heroin and guitars mix well.Touring for the great Cows Cd Sexy Pee Story.

Fantomas/Melt Banana in Boston,Ma. Fantomas are fucked up.They pulled off thier fuck upedness to perfection live.Watching Dave Lombardo and Mike Patton read off of each other was amazing. And Melt Banana is the best band I've heard in this century so far :)

Mudhoney in Providence,RI. Proof that Nirvana wasn't the best Seattle band out there (actually, the Melvins,Mudhoney and Tad were all cooler).

Sun City Girls on Easter Sunday in Boston,Ma. I dont even know what to say about this show.It changed my life! Anyone familiar with SCG already knows they are the cream of the weird music crop.

AC/DC in Boston,Ma. Touring for Highway to Hell.Angus is a madman. They aren't the same without Bon Scott :-(

Voivod/Vio-lence in Boston,Ma. A strange matchup that worked great.Voivod was the most creative and original "thrash" band, and Vio-lence was just pure speed and smash your face in.Vio-lence's Eternal Nightmare was my pick for album of the year in '86,and Voivod can do no wrong ever.

Metallica/Slayer in Providence,RI. Metallica was opening, touring for Ride the Lightning and Slayer was..well,Slayer! One hasn't lived if they haven't heard Angel of death live :)

I'm leaving out so many cool shows like Kreator,DRI,Death,Obituary,Autopsy,Kiss,Fugazi,Steel Pole Bathtub,NoMeansNo,The FUs/Straw Dogs,Dead Kennedys,The Clash,The Minutemen,CroMags and on and on.Like I say,it's tough to pick out ten :)

in a high school gym in 1968. Unfrickin believeable concert. None have ever topped it.

I also saw The Beach Boys twice and was awed by their live show.

And I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn right before he died.

99. Hey, man, that's too hip !
I've seen Dr. Jhon a couple of times and he sure is fun. Don't know if it was the same band each time, but rounded out by horns, it was a 8-9 person outfit each time. The range of stuff is so cool, too. Ellington to Iko Iko, smooth afro based jazz to twisted harmonic horn charts.

Welcome to DU.

90. My favorite? The CURE this last Summer...
and U2
Tom Petty
Collective Soul
Paul Simon
Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers (together for one show!)

But by far my favorite was the Curiosa Festival this Summer with the Cure as the headliner.

100. That WAS a good show...
BUT it is also the WORST Cure show I've seen in all my years of seeing them. That should say a lot about how well they perform live.

93. whew lots of reminders and still hard to remember!
Hank 3
Todd Rundgren and Utopia
Greatful Dead
ELP
ELO - great show At Celeberty Theater in PHX when it was new - revolving stage. Also saw Renaisance there.
ZZ Top
Al DiMeola
Believe it or not Grand Funk put on a good show back in the day
Numerous small Local bands have often put on FANTASTIC shows that had way more energy and "fun" than some big show.

Shout out to Austin's The Hakkenkaufs! When Kurto was with Chicken and before with Dashboard Mary - YEAH!!!! Go see 'em if you are in Austin, tell the guy in the John Deer hat that Watson says hi, bwahhahahahaha

96. In the early to mid 80s
For our first date, my future husband and I went to a Van Halen concert. During the next few years we saw Huey Lewis and the News, Bruce Springsteen (I grabbed the binoculars every time he turned around! LOL), and Willie Nelson - along with various others; but those were the biggies. We attended every Memphis in May event for almost 10 years - what fun we had.

Just a few years ago, we saw the Beach Boys - it was a sight: gray hair and walkers everywhere! LOL

And, now, we hate crowds!! I still have my old t-shirts from those days.

And NOW, my 11-year-old makes fun of my "oldies" but, guess what - HER music is 80% remakes of MY music!!!!!! In her face!

97. Wow, so many great ones to choose from
1) Pink Floyd, Soldier Field, Chicago, 1977, Animals Tour.

2) Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, 1978, Chicago Stadium. Great night of blues. Encore with all three on stage.

3) U2, Unforgettable Fire Tour, UIC Pavilion, Chicago. Mesmerizing.

4) Ramones, Haymakers in Palatine, Illinois. 1984. Small, smoky, stinky club, drunk, and loud as hell. Like the Ramones should be.

5) Ministry, 1983, McGreevy's Pub, Glenview Illinois. 2 shows, saw them both.

6) Cheap Trick, surprise Midnight New years Eve show, 1985, Limelight, Chicago. Came out at midnight, wailed on 10 songs, and left. Robin Zander in Black leather pants, and nothing else.

7) Nirvana, 1990, Cabaret Metro, Chicago. Saw them once on a Sunday night with about 30 people for $3 before anyone had heard of them (myself included) and was completely blown away. Saw them again later that year same venue sold out after nevermind came out, and it was still great.

8) Cyndi Lauper, 1983, Park West, Chicago. Great pipes...

9) Soundgarden, 1990, Riviera, Chicago. Opened for Danzig. Got booed. So they cranked it up and totally kicked ass, Chris Cornell flipping off the metalheads. Saw the first Danzig song, and left laughing at them.

10) Ozzy, Alpine Valley, WI, 1980, first tour with Blizzard of Ozz, with Randy Rhodes on guitar, original line-up Def Leppard opening, first time in the states.

Tied for honorable mentions: Jesus and Mary Chain, NIN, Thompson Twins, The Church, Peter Murphy, Smithereens, Cake, Jet, Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Cult, Paul Young, Nik Kershaw, Koko Taylor, Marcia Ball, Soul Asylum, The Wonderstuff, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Sun Ra and his Arkestra. So many more...
