Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 06:31 PM by BEFOREATHOUGHT
I'm helping my sister look for a laptop. She wants it mostly for dvd watching.
Someone is selling a used laptop with a Intel Celeron processor.

How does this processor compare to the Pentium?
What Pentium processor is it equivalent to?

Here are the specs on the Laptop.
Asking $400. Is this a good deal?

Hewlet Packard HP notebook. comes with microsoft windows XP home eddition.

Screen "14" inches.
Weights about 6-7 pounds.

240 MB of RAM
Hard drive 18.35 GB
DVD Drive.
1200 MHz
About 2 hr. battery time/ac adapter
Modem doesn't work!

Depends on what you'll use it for. Web browsing, word processing and such its probably plenty fast. graphics type stuff youd want to go with Pentium, if Intel is your choice.

Edit, both celeron and pentiums are put out by the same company, Intel. celeron is just the budget version. Someone else might give you the hard specifics on bit processing etc.

I wouldnt buy it. Sounds like it might have some problems if the modem isnt working. Who knows what happened to it?

2. what is the processor speed?

oops just saw it, sounds like a good deal to me. I would bet the modem issue is a software issue, probably a winmodem just needing drivers.

6. it's a pretty good deal
I'm willing to bet a gazillion bucks the modem doesn't work because of software.

3. it's a so-so deal
But you would be better off coming up with about 300 to 400 more and trying to get a new one.

I personally think Celeron sucks, but it isn;t the worst thing in the world.

Odds are the battery will be no good as they usually die in a year or two. A new battery could cost as much as $100.00

It has a decent amount of ram and DVD is nice, but someday the screen will go out and it will cost you about 500-600 to get that fixed.

I think there will be some major deals this holiday season and $799 laptops are starting to appear that would blow this one away.

4. It's not a bad deal
The dvd drive is a bonus.
If you can verify the battery lasts 2 hours (perhaps if you know this person, you can borrow the machine overnight?) try to do this.
Laptop batteries usually run about $100.

Modems are cheap. A card modem is about $35.
