I cannot say 'Cool' anymore and it bothers me. |
|
I have been hanging around DU for a couple of years now. Here at DU I have learned to use 'Cool'a lot. I kinda like saying 'Cool'.
My wife does not like me saying 'Cool' and told me so. "180" she said; "You are way too old to be saying 'Cool' so please do not say it any more.
Is there an age limit to cool things?
"Cool"

..but I'm 51, so maybe it isn't cool. I still use "groovy," too, which isn't cool at all.

We had a Navy Doctor (Submarine Medical Officer) All the enlisted men called him 'Doctor Groovy'. He claimed not to like it but deep down inside I believe he thought it to be a 'Cool' name.

50. No, no, "groovy " is very cool. |
|
It makes people blink, then grin. Or else they look confused, and you know who you're really talking to.

41. You are NOT to old to say cool... |
|
you are too old to be told not to say it!
I'm 51 and my husband is cool, my Beagle is cool, my '57 Chevy is cool. The word became hip in the 50's and anyone around since then has every right to say it.
Your wife is not cool.

I use it all the time in e-mail replies to co-workers and when I'm around my 20 yr old son. No one's ever said anything to me. However, do you remember how we used to laugh when people would say, "that's boss" or "whoaa, that's really bitchin"?

The usage of cool as a general positive epithet or interjection has been part and parcel of English slang since World War II, and has even been borrowed into other languages, such as French and German.
Originally this sense is a development from a Black English usage meaning "excellent, superlative," first recorded in written English in the early 1930s.
Jazz musicians who used the term are responsible for its popularization during the 1940s. As a slang word expressing generally positive sentiment, it has stayed current (and cool) far longer than most such words. One of the main characteristics of slang is the continual renewal of its vocabulary and storehouse of expressions: in order for slang to stay slangy, it has to have a feeling of novelty. Slang expressions meaning the same thing as cool, like bully, capital, keen, hot, groovy, hep, crazy, nervous, far-out, rad, and tubular have for the most part not had the staying power or continued universal appeal of cool.
