2. Does the brand name mean quality?
I have hypermedias that I plan to use for X-mas gifts. (Well, after I burn the home videos on them.)

9. Both + and - were on sale when I was there today.
By the way, could someone give me an explanation of the difference between them?

13. The "+" means that it has extra features. But the most important
thing is that more DVDs can use "-" than "+".

18. Not exactly true....
DVD+R and DVD-R are just two different and competing standards for recordable media. It's basically the standand in how the media is recorded than anything. One standard was built by one company and another was built by another. The + is not indicative of anything extra (except that they are often a tiny bit pricier).

Generally speaking it's a crap shot with compatibility with standalone machines, particularly older ones. Newer ones generally support both formats fairly well.

I had one that would ONLY play burnable cds that were on CD+RW media. Never got around to trying DVD burnable media on it.

My current one will do both pretty well, but can be a picky with DVD-R media if you don't have it burned "just so". However, it does do DIVX and XvID and MP3 and SVCD and VCD and picture CD as well as DVDs and was only 69 bucks.

8. Not necessarily....some media burns at a higher speed..
...without making a "coaster" out of it more regularly, but I buy cheapy cd and dvd media all the time.

11. That's what I went to get today, but they were out ...
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 05:03 PM by Flammable Materials
... so I got a rain-check.

I was also shopping for an anniversary present for my wife, and that's when I discovered that Eddie Izzard's "Glorious", "Unrepeatable" and "Definite Article" were all just issued on DVD this month. Instant anniversary giftie!

But I stopped in Office Max on the way home ... just in case, I had a sneaky intuition that they might have had a sale as well, and I was right!

15. A week or two ago, Best Buy had two 50 disk spindles of Memorex
for $39.99 (it was a buy one get one free thing).

I meant to order them then, and didn't get a chance.

14. You think that's going to happen?
So I guess there's no MPAA "tax" on these.

16. According to those in the know, these qualify as "2nd or 3rd class media".
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm has a comprehensive list of manufacturers and brands that use them. A little research on videohelp.com shows that Spin-X usually uses Prodisc or Moser Beaur as suppliers. Prodisc is rated as having a 80-95% success rate, while Moser Beaur is rated at 50-80%. The discs I'm currently using were made by Prodisc, and I've had no problems so far.

17. Burning them at a slower rate is sometimes helpful with cheapy media.
I have a 52x cd burner and NEVER burn at higher than 24.

My dvd burner can do 8x but I usually keep it at 2.
